They are the same units.
Self feed means you feeding it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oh, okay /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
But that doesn't change the fact that the pics are VERY different machines. Maybe they have the picture on somewhere else and I'm missing it. You say you have the 20 HP model. That's a gas unit, not PTO? John

I currently have a Valby CH260 (w/ hydraulic feed) which is definately a chipper. It makes no pretences about being a shredder. Before that I had a Valby CH150.
In either case it shreads great if you fill the hopper with leaves, small branches etc. and then put in a tree or medium branch with leaves or branches all the stuff gets pulled into the disk and shredded well. Personally I think the Valby is a much heavier duty chipper than the Bearcat. I evaluated both I purchased and liked the Valby much better.Valby Chippers Andy

Mistake on my part....

Valby does say their chippers can shread. "Shredding Paper Both ends of the knife are covered, so twigs or other material do not get hung up on the knives. This enables the chipper to also be used for shredding paper. " Shredding

I think this must be the picture you are looking for. PTO Driven CS

The actual chipper/shredder unit is the same whether PTO driven or engine driven.

I agree w/ Andy. The big Valby was one of the other units I looked at. I think, from comparing specs, that the Valby and Vandermolen Wood Pro AVP are both beefier and more versatile units than the BearCats, although I think that both were more expensive when I got quotes on them.

Another consideration is machine safety. I think that chipper/shredders are, along with tillers and PHDs, just about the most dangerous tractor attachments that CUT owners use, because of the danger and possibly fatal consequences of coming into contact with their rapidly moving parts. One of the things that I liked about the Wood Pro was that its hopper is not horizontal and you feed in from above, angling the branches downward. The lip of the hopper is about 4' high and so deep that it is amost impossible to accidentally get your hands anywhere near the blades and flywheel.

That is particularly important becasue the flywheel and blade assembly has got to weigh well over 150# (30" diam and almost 5" thick). The Wood Pro can handle branches up to 6" diam and the power transfer system has it spinning at well over 2000 rpm when the rear pto is at 540 rpm. When you disengage the pto, its momentum is so great that it takes over 3 minutes to spin down. Because the motion of the knives tends to draw material in, anybody who comes in contact with it is going to be sliced, diced and pureed long before the machine stops. I feel a lot better knowing that the machine's design makes it almost impossible for me (or any other operator) to get in harm's way, even through stupidity or carelessness.

Yes, thanks, that one looks like the Woods. I've been so busy, I probably was not looking carefully enough. This darn cold virus isn't helping concentration any either! Thanks again, John
EDIT: as to MadDog's post about safety issues, I notice that the shredder portion of the Woods/Bearcat is very easily accessed and the blades shredder blades are just below the surface of the "brushy" material covering them. An accident waiting to happen. When my dealer and I were demo'ing it, we were careful to throw the stuff in from a little distance. Those pulverizers are MEAN! John
