3pt trailer hitch

Bird, Gary et al,
Thanks for the answers. I love the idea of backing up under the trailer tongue instead of lifting it and trying to hump it forward or sideways...especially if it is full of brush or some other load. Of course that also means you've got to have good aim in reverse and/or a trailer ball a whole lot smaller than the receiving socket!

My neighbor has put a ball on his box and likes it.

How has your 3pt hitch from lowerys lasted? Is it holding up well? I'm thinking of ordering one.

PBurns,

Is this a receiver tube and insert or a solid piece? I've looked at the two photos and can't really tell. Obviously, I'm hoping it's a receiver and insert because I have some other things I can insert in the tube (like my winch setup). Even if it's not I think it's a great deal for the money and want to get one.

I contacted Lowery's today and found the hitch (they call it a 'Towbar') is the fixed (solid weld) style. The young lady with whom I spoke said she didn't see a problem with them building one with the reciever tube for me (or even possibly making that an option in the future). She did tell me, however, that something like that would be more likely to happen "in the winter" as they are just "swamped and way behind" right now. It sounded like anything even remotely 'custom' isn't in the cards now. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

She did offer to have the plant manager call me back. I'll post any new information that call provides.

OverlyRun,

I have a drawbar and still like the idea of having one of these. One reason is that with this I could move trailers around without cranking up the jacks. Truth be told, I'd probably not lock down the coupler and just back under the coupler, lift it up and go. I'd only be moving something a short distance to set it down again. Another reason is that my drawbar is so low that I doubt I could get the swivel jack up high enough to move one trailer I have with just the drawbar.

If I welded a ball to the top of my box blade it would be too high for my trailer.

PBurns - thanks for the info on the 3 pt hitch. One piece of info that I wanted to add was that evidently Lowery's figured out that they had a good thing going. The cost of the hitch is now $55 plus shipping.
I still ordered one even though I could weld one of my own - just not enough time between installing new barn and chasing house builder. I need one so I can pull my 16' trailer around for fall hayrides at our church - got volunteered since I have a tractor! However I will add some links for a chain to connect drawbar to hitch to prevent it from going skyward if more weight is on the back of the trailer than on the tongue.
Still a pretty good deal for the $55......

John Miller did us all a similar favor back in '01, so it seems it's time again. Not sure if the Lowery hitch is $55 still, but sure seems like one heck of a bargain if it still is.
