I have recently purchased 85 acres of land in TX where half of the land is pasture that will need to be maintained. I am interested in purchasing a new tractor (60 months no interest) and I would like to have a cab (TX summers are brutal). What size would you recommend and what make do you recommend? We would mainly be using the tractor for mowing (maybe hay in the future) and for general use.

I am new to this forum and any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Check out the new Mahindra line--many of them have cabs. 60-70 hp (pto) would be a nice fit for 40+ acres of pastureland. Mahindra advertises on TBN so start there. BTW: my haying tractor is a 2008 Mahindra 5525 (54 hp engine, 45 hp pto, 2WD, gear tranny). It's overkill for my 6-acre hayfield but nice to have anyway.

Welcome, Andy!

Texas is vast, terrain is mucky to mountainous, sand to rock, desert to forests. Would be helpful to know more of where you are, terrain type, etc.

That said, you are invited to spend many hours here on TBN.... there are numerous who have gone before you with exactly the same question...and the poster's answers will not change.

Me...I recommend a Kubota Grand L5740HSTC...with heavy duty FEL bucket with teeth, 4wd, quick attach, top and tilt, work lights forward and rear, front grill bumper, 3 hydraulic rear ports, R4's, liquid filled tires, FEL hay spear, rear 3ph hay fork, pallet forks, chain hooks welded everywhere, box blade, herbicide sprayer and license. Other attachments will be influenced by terrain and soil type.

Let me know more and I'll be glad to spend more of your hard earned $$

I would recommend buying what fits u not what fits everybody else and buying from a dealer who is willing to work with u and has good costumer service before and after the purchase and also a good mechinal service not one that just wonts your money people can help u with what size to get but not what brand that needs to be up to what u like not everybody else just cause one tractor has worked for some people dont meen it will work for u thats just my opinion

Everyone has to start somewhere, discussion of brands and models are a very large part of TBN. This is just the starting point where suggestions are made and the OP is turning over rocks. Sure there is brand loyalty to contend with but most people won't be loyal to a brand that they have had issues with.

Reminds me of a certain group of fishermen in Louisiana many years ago that all had 20HP Johnson outboards, why is that?

Buying a new tractor is quite an experience I'm finding out. As I look at the various and different models and makes, I'm leaning one way today, a different way yesterday, and last week was yet something else. I'm glad I have time to look at all angles and then be really pleased with a final decision.
My Kubota dealer is a very good outfit, the sales guy and the service shop. New Holland has a prince of a dealer nearby, I could easily be a customer there and be happy. Then there is the prospect of a Massey-Ferguson in their 2600 series, very impressive HD tractor. But those big green babies are alluring too, and resale value holds so well if kept up nice as mine will be. Right now, I am leaning toward a JD 6115D, with 673 loader and a few bells and whistles. I want power, comfort, resale value, looks, and simplicity, from a good dealer and builder. But your decision will depend on your finances, and what tickles your fancy. Look at all of them, and check out that short video on MF's web site on the 2600 series, a strong tractor with tough features it appears to me. I may yet buy the 2680 machine for it's apparent stoutness.

I sure wish there was a clear choice among brands, but there isn't or at least I haven't found this to be true. We have had a Massey Ferguson and Case that were really disappointing; recently traded the Case on a M8540, but still consider both brands to be on a par with everything else.

I would recommend deciding on the size needed as well as how you want it equipped then go look at and drive all the models and check the dealerships at the same time. Poor dealers in my area keep me away from considering a couple of brands.

I don't farm anymore, so I can't help much on that, but the advice by TEXASJOHN sounds good to me. For a true farm tractor, I like the Hydraulic Shuttle Shift, but for an all around utility tractor, it is the HST hands down.

Good luck.

How it fits on the inside is more important than the name on the outside. You'll just have to sit in them and see.

Deere, Kubota, FNH, Case, Mahindra, Kioti (or however you spell that Korean tractor) all seem to have fans and detractors posting. Probably Deere and Kubota have the most fans and probably the highest quality. But the quality level changes year to year. I would just focus on the big names and for sure avoid the ones made in china or other commie countries.
