Forty acres of pasture? I think I would have some animals maintain that pasture for me, growing and gaining weight. That's what pasture is for. I'd prefer that to spending big bucks on a tractor and then to maintain that tractor and pay for diesel and to purchase implements and ....
If you have just bought the pasture you might want to wait a little while before going out and buying equipment. What are your plans for the pasture?
Two years ago I purchased a 25 acre pasture that adjoins my farm. The first year I had someone come in and make hay on shares, they do all the work and I get half the hay. The next year I let the pasture just grow. Instead of me spending several days on the tractor cutting the pasture I leased it to a neighbor for one year and he put beef cattle on it. The cattle have maintained the pasture and the lease money paid the taxes for my entire farm. Next year I'm probably going to have my own animals grazing that pasture.
