Now Now Thingy, it's one thing to pick at a mans choice of a tractor, but another to pick at his dog.

Thingy,

That's not far from Princeton. I used to call on American Block in Princeton about two years ago. I worked for Quikrete, they have a plant in Pounding Mill, VA. Nice country down there. I was always impressed by how friendly the people are.

You got any Rattle Snakes growing in that 3 week grass?

BTW, Oak, how's that Cub running?

I have a Cub Cadet, 20 HP, 46" deck (forgot the model #) and am not happy with it. It mows well, but the controls are poorly designed. The go pedal (fwd, reverse) is in an awkward location, the brake pedal rubs my leg if I'm not careful and if I don't use the "cruise control" (actully just a throttle lock), I get a cramp in my leg from the awkward position of the go pedal.

Note also, that when you look over the many makes & models, that one factory in the country makes most lawn tractors. They provide the buyer with a list of options & build to their specs & put the buyer's brand on them. So when you look them over, you will see identical components on different brands. So ignore brand, just buy the one with the components you want. I believe Deere & maybe some CC models are the only ones built elsewhere.

Well, there are four or five still. Deere builds all their own machines. MTD builds Cub Cadets and economy makes YardMan, White, TroyBilt, Yard Machines, Garden Way and Bolens. Husqvarna builds Huskys and all the tractors for Sears Craftsman. Agco builds Simplicity and Massey Fergusons. You can still find a Toro/Wheel Horse or two made by Toro. Unfortunately Exmark is no longer making Ariens LGT's, and Murray is long gone, thank God for that.

Here's a quick update on my original post here back in February. I ended up purchasing a Cub GT2554 because of a combination of cost, materials of construction, and advise from others.

(1) After four (4) hours of use, my transmission began leaking fluid from the rear axle. The dealer ended up replacing the entire transmission.

(2) the poly engine hood cracked on its hinge and basically fell off. This, too, is currently being replaced under warranty.

I hope these are flukes and nothing more. I have about 15 hours on the machine, and it has held up (otherwise) well to the rough and bouncy terrain I need to mow over.

I do have a question. I had the dealer adjust the reverse speed to make cutting and traveling in reverse faster. However, I have noticed that the forward speed is slightly slower than it once was. Are these two (forward and reverse) interrelated, or can I both increase the reverse speed and increase the forward speed?

1* & 2* I've got a little over 24 hours on mine with no problems.
3*Probably flukes - lets hope
4*I noticed mine was pretty slow in reverse when backing up on a hill. On level ground it's not as noticeable.
5* That's normal.
6*They are interrelated.
I have not decided on what to do on mine; just leave it like it is or adjust it to give it a little more reverse speed.
I don't feel that loosing a little forward speed to gain a tad more reverse speed will bother me to much in my case as I can't mow or go full speed ahead due to my ground is to rough here to do that any way.
If I try going full speed ahead it's a jarry bouncy ride that bounces you off the seat.
You said your ground was pretty rough too.
Have you changed the engine oil and the oil and Tranny filters yet?
This needs done around 5 or 10 hours.
