Wow talk about breaking news. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

It was there (honest) but only under the 4720. That there were differences caught my eye because I realized when flipping between models that the flail mower list was changing. First time I looked the 25A was only on the 4120 and 4720 - not the two in between models. WHILE I was verifying that in one IE session and typing up my last post in another - that changed or so I thought. Anyway, I deleted the comment I had typed on the 25A. BUT the MX8 was definitely in there on the 4720 - I even hit the link and it brought up info and a pic of the semi-mount version.

NOW the 25A is on all the lists but the 390 disappears below the 4520. And the MX8 is off of all the lists.

I thought these things are on the road to the dealers as of yesterday? Are specs still changing??? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

OK - this is bizarre.

Instead of going in through the homeowners or commercial doors - if I go in through the ag section, sign in, click on the 4000 Ten link (no 4000 Twenty listed under ag yet) THEN change the word "ten" in the URL to "twenty" I get to what appears to be the same 4000 Twenty section. However - if I then go to the 4720 attachment list - tada - there's the MX8.

I'll try a direct link post...

4720 in through the out door

How deep is this rabbit hole anyway?

You are digging in the fun zone where CUTs fit in the JD plan. Lerge LG dealerships, Ag and Groundscare dealerships all carry CUTs. But only Ag dealers get the MX8...

Heh heh. Only fair, I'm buying (maybe) from an ag dealer. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Not that I think I'd ever justify the green for that parictular green attachment but it is nice to know what is and isn't a workable combo!

Tim,

The current JD line of compacts use garden tractor switches for PTO engagement. They are identical to the ones found on the JD garden tractors beginning with the LX series.

Also JD had used the automotive style parking brake on the early model 4000 series back in 99-00. The 01's like mine came with the knob on the dash.

You seem to like mechanical linkages just like me. That's why I love the 70 and 90 series so much. You would be a great fit for a 990. No frills but a great machine.

They sure look like the 7920 front end. I can't wait to try one of these new machines. That's the nice part of working for a Deere dealership.

Nick,

I was speaking more of the placement of the PTO knob (dash, behind the steering wheel) than the look of the knob itself. Might not be a problem but just seems to me that the old fender placement was better if you wanted to operate the PTO while stationary and off the tractor. Whoops, I forgot, big lawnmowers aren't supposed to be used like that.

I've looked over the 990 (specs, any way) many times. If it could use the 460 loader I'd be very tempted. Speaking of which I'm convinced that is strictly a marketing, not engineering, move by JD to push people to the 4000 series. I dug far enough one time to find the axle weight limit specs - and the 990/large frame 4000's share the same rear axle (weight limit anyway) and the 990 is actually rated a tick higher on the front axle. That artificial limitation to the 430 sort of peeves me.

However, I do also like the reverser tranny - both operation and range of speeds - on the big 4000's.

Ironically while I've seen tons of 790's I'd never seen a 990 in person until last week when I went in to my dealer to talk about the 4000 twentys. My dealer actually had a 990 sitting at the end of the large frame CUT row. Nice looking tractor.

Mike I never said I wasn't nutz - just that I wasn't imagining the MX8! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Speaking of which, on this a.m., the MX8 is now listed under the 4720 attachments even through the 'consumer' forum.

Glad I'm not in JD's IT department these past few weeks!

BTW, i just stuck a response to the shear pin vs. slip clutch thread. I wanted to note that I PREFER the PTO switch the way it is. Having to use a slip clutch (which is a good idea anyway) is fine when the current control is so well placed for finding it in a real hurry, should you need to turn it off...

I recently hadto repair the wiring, which was far easier than twiddling with bent or broken mechanical linkages. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

They are certainly reading this thread, and are noting the issues we raise....

It just occured to me - I thought that JD was hinting something along the lines of "many current optional features will be standard". Outside of the DSCV joystick has anyone figured out what is now standard that used to be optional?

Outside of the joystick and by default the new engine's alternator - which if the JDParts entry is right is now 70 amps instead of the old stock 40 thereby elminating the need for the optional 55 amp unit! - I haven't noticed anything yet.

I thought the extendable draft links would be an obvious one since some competition does that, but they're still optional, as are any extra lights, along with (as far as I can tell) all the various electronic options for the hydro.

I THINK THE TWO ELECTRONICS UPGRADES WERE COMBINED AT A REDUCED PRICE.

ooPS sORRY ABOUT THE CAPS!!!

It still could be possible to make telescopic draft std. at any time...

That's quite a difference!

I actually am surprised at how little differance there is... I will try and get a straight on shot at the same level, it seems the differances are more in perception, than actual...

As Mike said, tough to qualify when you're got an apples-and-oranges set up (note the tire differences). Obviously the hood is changed, but actually the fender, deck, and "seat closer" (between the seat and the inside of the fender) are all different part numbers as well - even though they don't look all that different, at least from a distance.

I dunno - looks are strictly personal taste - and maybe I'm just stuck behind the times - but I cannot see a single esthetic improvement to the new look. Best thing I can say is it isn't as bad as what NH did to the boomers. But IMO that isn't saying much. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Geez if I could just get that power reverser on the 5105 this would be a lot easier.

   / 4020 Series Specs #79
I LOVE the new look. But it doesn't make me wanna trade... While the wraparound lights aren't a world better, they are better.

   / 4020 Series Specs #80
Tim,

When I had the 5420 1st and reverse were right inline. The only difference between that and the power reverser would have been the extra reverse gears and a couple more forward gears and having to use the clutch. I would go drive one and see if it really makes that much difference to you. Or like you said get the 5220. On that tractor you can have the reverser and the slow gear mode.
