My uncle has a 1965 era Chevy 409 cu in engine that he no longer needs. It has always run well. It was in a Chevy Model 30 logging truck which is basically a flatbed with a cab-over style. The truck is gone but the engine is sitting safely in the barn. It always ran real well and was a treat to drive. The engine itself needs a rebuild on the water pump and alternator. Other than that the engine is in good shape.

Does anyone know of any good uses for this 409? I know it was popular with the hot rods years ago.

409's were not put in trucks 348's were. It looks identical. The 348 isn't worth anything. There are casting # on the block to identify what it is. If someone did put a 409 in it it is worth some money depending on what it came out of.

The good ole W blocks. Basically torque monsters. I put a 348 w/ 4 BBl in my 57 chevy way back when because everyone said it wouldn't fit in the engine compartment. It was tight but got her in. Had Hurtibese cheater slicks on it and amber tinted (Spray on Tint) on all the windows.. And also a Hurst mystery shifter and dual exhaust with Cherry Bomb mufflers. Sold it when I got drafted. Talk about memory lane.........

My second car was a 63 Impala SS, 409, dual quads, 4spd. Today I would hate to hear what it is worth. Although my dad gave me my first car and that today is worth as much as the 63 of not more,... A 56 crown vic with the old 292 Y block. The 09 porcupine motor was much more fun,..

Heres a pic of a car I gave to my son 5 years ago. #396 punched out to 402 Big block. 850 double pumper. 4:10 rear end ladder bars and 400 tranny..Had 427 Vette heads and dome pistons. 10.5 to 1. He sold it 3 years ago when the ole muscle cars weren't bringing in any money. Now he can kick himself...

Attach 3 or 4 trannies to it and make a tractor, of course! :D

John; Can I kick him ?????? Early 60s - early 70s mid size chevrolets are gold. Style was fantastic and alot of performance on tap. I bought every bargain ( my wife would let me have ) I could afford. Some went to pay doctor bills.... others to buy the latest project. I managed to hang on to 4 old vetts and a pontiac convert. The big block is unbelievable and very hard to replace at yesterdays prices. In old iron.... the bow tie is magic !

Are you sure 409's weren't put in trucks?

I know this is just somebody's website, but it shows codes for 252 hp 409's in trucks.

Big Block Chevy Engine Suffix Stamping Codes

A 409 would have been poor choice for a truck engine. It had the biggest bore and shortest stroke of any GM big block.

I stand corrected, I think. I've been a gearhead all my life and never heard of a 409 in a truck. Could it be like the 427's in the trucks, tall deck, not the same as in the cars.

Gotta tell ya, if Chevies are gold, Mopars are Diamonds :D It amazes me what they sell for on Ebay. I like Road Runners; they are going for some steep prices.

I prefer Mopars over most others, but have always really liked the '66 Chevelle SS396. My Uncle had one; the high horsepoer 396 with 4spd. That car was really something. When I was a kid, my parents had a '63 Impala SS 327 4 speed with console, buckets etc. For a large car, that thing would fly! I could just image what the car would have been like with a 409!

Interesting thing about prices though. Superbirds and Daytona's carry big price tags, but the Talladega's that challenged them, the only one I have seen for sale was really clean, low miles but was only about $30k.

The other intersting thing, is how for so many Chevies out there, they were no-shows in Nascar and USAC in the mid 60's to very early 70's. Mopar and Ford just blew them clean off the tracks. Chevy didn't become a player in Nascar until rule changes basically took away the winged cars and the Talladegas. There were lots of Road Runners, Chargers, Torino's and such running, but never hear of Chevelles or Impala's on the big speedways till after the Hemi was out of the picture. Even with the 427's, Chevy was not in the hunt, factory sponsored or privateer. nothing could compete withe Hemi until restrictions were place on it, then Ford was able to dice it up with them.
