I like to also clarify one thing. My comment about ordering from Buds Gun Shop first was cause I'm still having to deal with the break in (police, insurance and making my home a safe place again until the repair's can be made). I'm on a time table here actually. Plus I'm dealing with my wife emotions. She took the biggest hit. She lost $7800 in jewelry alone along with her welding band (she works at the hospital as to why she doesn't/didn't wear it). The thief destroyed my back door. He kicked the back door so many times, he busted the studs in the wall. The french doors, studs in the wall, drywall, framing for the door, paint and trim plus labor is a little over $6000 dollars. So, hopefully you guys will understand were I coming from about buying from Buds Gun Shop and being on a time table.

I do understand, and your loss is not just economic, it is the fact your personal space has been violated. Your security has been threatened in a big way. Your wife lost here wedding ring, and while I am male, I think I understand how she would feel. Be safe, and Good Luck in the future.

The next day I decided to go to the most expensive place around here. Wait for it, if you haven't guessed yet, Gander Mountain. Let me say this, these folks were really down to earth people. And the person I dealt with was really a good guy. I ended up buying a Springfield Armory XD Service Model .45acp.

I have fired that exact gun, and let me tell you, I think you made a good decision. It is a really sweet shooting pistol, and you can barely tell you're shooting .45. I think Springfield really has a winner on their hands with the XD.

Just gotta give my 2 pennies worth...I am a cop, specifically an under cover narcotics agent...I am a state certified POST firearms instructor...I have been shooting since I was about 4 or 5 and have shot just about all the calibers you can shoot...retired military with all the shooting experience that goes along with that career...

first, there is NO substitute for shooting practice, both range "shootin paper" and practical, "shoot n scoot"

Second, it makes absoulutly no difference as to caliber when the first shot or two are on target, ie, head shot, or center mass followed by head shot

Third, if you miss, refer to one and two and again it makes absoulutly no difference what caliber you're shooting

Finally, I recommend you shoot both the .40 and the .45 and make sure you can handle both, if you can't, downsize, and refer to rule one and two...

The ballistics/performance/handling/stopping power arguments can go on forever, however the bottom line is ya have to be able to put rds on target all the time, every time and ya have to have a weapon you feel comfortable with doing that whether it's a .17, .22, .40, .45 or a .500...

Having said all that I usually carry a .38 for UC work, a .40 Sig in uniform, and a .45 Kimber in my personal vehicle...the house gun is a Rem 870 with #9....the Polaris Ranger/Tractor/Farm/General purpose is a DPMS M4 5.56...I routinely practice (usually practical shooting) and can "usually" hit what I'm aiming at....

No offense intended to any prior poster, they all had outstanding advice and all had merit...

Rich

Excellent advice right here!!!

Okay, I understand. I did say "and provides good customer service" ;-)
Yes you did. The sad thing that will probably come from this adventure, I really like my long guns (hunting and trap shooting), so I'll probably not be returning to buy ammo, cleaning gear, camping stuff ect from my local gun shops. I had intentions with cash in wallet to purchase a hand gun and walked out with a bad taste in my mouth. All well, life goes on.

The good thing that came from this, the manager of the gun area at Gander Mountain did not give the young man any grief cause I was with him on and off for about four hours. I talked with the manager before I purchased the handgun and told him about my break in and that I had intentions of buying a handgun and a gun safe before leaving the building and that this process of deciding which gun I wanted, was going to take some time to decide on. He told me to take my time and buy what I want. All in all, win, win.

Well our only way to encourage good customer support is to help weed out those who do not provide it. Although I like to have local shops with good customer service, I'm happy to vote the bad ones out of business. It's the only way we can hope to improve things.

Letting those shops with good customer service know that we are willing to spend our money there will let them know that we value it and are willing to support it.

Back to "tractors", the same thing applies there! Guess what brand I don't buy around here because one dealer has the area locked up and their sales people don't want to be "bothered" with small ($20K) items. OTOH, I've found good competition and good sales people with the the orange brand :)

This Springfield Armory XD pistol is a really nice gun. I have not put 500 rounds through mine yet, but from holding the gun and shooting a few boxes of ammo, it fit my hand pretty good. The recoil was not that bad. My opinion, I think Springfield Armory has a higher quality recoil spring installed for this reason. But the one big reason that sold me on this weapon, the trigger pull. It has the same trigger pull pounds wise as my stolen Sig Sauer, but it did not feel the same. Even the amount of travel of the trigger felt different. I know the trigger travel of these two guns are made different but the XD trigger pull and the amount of travel, in my opinion, is a better quality gun. I know someone will say I'm not comparing apples to apples, but this XD compared to my Sig Sauer P250 are not even in the same class (again, my opinion).

Before someone starts shooting rounds my way about the two weapons that I'm talking about. I'm just comparing the trigger assembly in these two weapons.
