Installing and Flashing Windows Correctly - Fine Homebuilding

Trust in your contractor is always a nice thing, and in most of what he is doing, it looks like he is a very good contractor. But sometimes they miss something, or they are not on site to see everything. And sometimes they just do things the way they always have because they have never been made aware of a problem, or a better way to do it.

Thank you for your input Eddie! I rarely see my builder. I leave for work before he arrives, and he is generally gone before I get home. I may try to catch him sometime in the next few mornings to quiz him. Thanks again!

Eddie, not saying this is a reason to not tape them but, he's spray foaming the walls. Maybe Ed thinks that will stop window drafts? We'll see when they spray the foam?

Oh, never mind.... thinking as I was typing.... the spray foam won't solve the problem. The foam will be on the outer edge of the 2x6 window frame. The window is sitting inside the box.

I didn't see any other attempt to get a seal. I couldn't verify that any caulking was used either.

I thought my builder overkilled my window and door installs
Taped the window box at the corner seams. Ran a big dat bead of caulk around the frame before installing the window. Then taped all around the outside of the window before installing metal.

Sorry for the distraction Jarid.

Looks like they worked on soffits and eaves today. They did add some sort of tape for the top of the windows on the east side.

I see a lot of Osb used here, but I recently read that some steel roofing manufacturers recommend plywood as it holds a screw better. I have seen some cases where the osb was replaced, because we can get a fair amount of rain here, and if the builder leaves the osb uncovered too long, it won’t pass inspection.

Not really shop related, but footings to reinforce the deck for the hot tub! I’m getting a shop, so the wife and kids think they need a hot tub.

No progress today either. My guy did stop by and talk about electrical stuff. Lots of outlets, lights, and 220 plugs for the welder. One thing my wife and I have had a tough time deciding on is a security light. I want something to shine across the yard so that I can see the basement door on my way in. Problem is, it will shine DIRECTLY in our bedroom window. Neither one of us want a motion light either as we are afraid critters will kick it on throughout the night. My solution was to put it on a timed switch. When I suggested that to the builder he responded with 的 wish I had known that was an issue, I could have put a switch in the basement when I trenched the water and electric? I NEVER even thought that was an option.
