My 4110 Mahindra has developed a popping noise in the front end when in 4WD. quits when I take it out of 4WD. From reading other posts I may have a problem from carrying heavy loads on FEL (round hay bales), Any ideas on what may be wrong and estimated repair costs? Bill Beyer, Memphis Tn.

Check to make sure the bolts holding the front axil to the tractor are not loose or missing.

In my case it means that the front diff. ring gear and pinion is striped out. This makes the 2nd time in a year.
And that will cost you about 1,000 to 1,500 in parts!

Since you didn't mention how heavy the bales weight and maybe someone else with a 4110 can answer just how much weight the tractor FEL can lift and move safely. I've seen large bale weight anywhere from 1500 to 2000 pounds and those were dry and no ideal what a wet one would weight but I bet a lot more than that tractor can handle and being in 4WD I could see how the front end could be damaged. Sound like you would be better off with a rear spear to move bales.

Checked the bolts on front axle, all were tight. The bales weigh approx. 1200 lbs. Rear tire size 17.5L-24, front tire 12-16.5 NHS. vin 4110 V12 0437. Noise is internal popping noise when in FWD. Guess one or two gear teeth have broken. Will check with dealer tomorrow on ring and pinion. Thanks for the quick replies to my question. Have really been happy with this tractor. Bought it at a yard sale with 5 pieces of equipment. I do have a 3 point spear on it also, but have been using the FEL spear to load hay on trailer and truck, also when delivering hay have to drop it over a fence and place it in rings. Will have to find a different method. Do not want to continue overloading a good machine till something else breaks.
Thanks again,
Bill Beyer

Wondering if you've jacked up the front end to check to see where the problem might be because maybe you broke a axle shaft and not the gears.

Take your center drain plug out and you will find your answer! Metal pieces will come floating out. I'm trying to get dealers on here to give me a parts quote on the parts that I need if you want to try to do a power buy, you know a 2 fer discount or something.

Possible but not likely. I've broken approx. 8 or 10 front axles in mine over the years and it doesn't make any noise whatsoever after it snaps, in fact it's about impossible to tell which side broke until you take a side down to actually inspect it. I can change a front axle in mine in less than 15 minutes. A countershaft in an outdrive takes longer as you have to disassemble more but still can be done in less than an hour once you know the procedure. I swear I'm reasonably sure changing the rear tires to the 16.9s are what stopped my axles from breaking, if they make it thru this year without breaking one I'll be pretty well convinced of it. I think the tires would have caused my differential demise as well either directly or indirectly from snapping all those axles.

It sure sounds like for whatever reason you guys in Tennessee area are having issue with the gears. Years ago I drag raced a 68 Camaro with a 427 and 5:13 gears and never broke a set of gears with an engine of 600+ hp so it sounds more of a manufacturing issue.
Have to wonder if they are using cheap Chinese steel for the gears. Wonder if someone from Mahindra that reads this forum can answer this question. Who makes the gears? They probably have a stock pile of gears so it's possible that they all have the same issue.
Has anyone else read about any other series breaking gears, Ive not.
Maybe as a solution to this issue might be to switch to a Synthetic severe gear lube from Amsoil since it could help protect the gears and bearings from scoring and wear which could lead to maybe even finally breaking. It's not cheap but neither is replacing a set of gears, myself I'd try anything to prevent broken gears.

Also I have no stock in the Amsoil, I just like there products.

Cheap gears is right! I can't get any info out of Mahindra. No updated parts, the same old junk, just keep replacing parts at 1,200 a pop. I don't think that gear oil will help junk metal!

How are the gears breaking also have you ever taken a picture and posted the picture, I'd be interested in seeing one.

I will have one to take a picture of in a couple of weeks. When I get the new parts in.

I found a better deal on the parts to fix the front diff. with, get TYM parts, they are cheaper! What everyone else wanted $1,200 for I got for $940. Sweeeet!

I gotta tell ya. It's not sweeeet; just better. Sweeeet is no repairs needed!!

I wonder if these repairs are related to the mismatched tires on front and back? I guess it's a problem with the early Mahindra 4110.

Cheers Coffeeman

OK ... I bypassed this when I 1st followed this thread, assuming there was damage. But ... Have you verified that there is damage?? Does the popping happen when going straight or just turning? Does it happen forward and backward? How fast is the pop? Does the pop get faster as you go faster. My 7520 has always had a grumble/grind when turning sharply on good ground in 4wd. It only is apparent when going slow. It is load on the gears due to the fronts being pushed. [Whatever front lead is designed in disappears as a turn sharpens until finally the fronts are pushed.] Mahindra is not concerned with my noise because its normal. Is your tractor new and maybe you just noticed it? ... Or is it old enuf that the fronts might be worn down to a smaller diameter stressing the front/rear load sharing and finally a quiet sound became louder. Maybe it is a warning but not yet damaged.

Noise was the FWD drive shaft coupling broken or stripped. Will try and post a picture of it later. I only tried it in FWD going straight, and it would pop very loud about every 2 seconds. Did not try it in reverse or turning. It would increase if I went faster. No noise at all in 2WD. Let you know when it is back together and hauling hay.

My recent experience is that if you don't have the rear tires loaded, load them NOW, before you use your FEL anymore. I think now that my front diff. problems are from mismatched rear tires 17.5 (was on) and everyone is saying that it should be 16.9, but I have bought a set of loaded Ag tires and WOW what a difference. People were telling me to load the rear tires and I wasn't a believer, but now I am! I still don't think that the R4 (industrial tires) were right for me, but I see the value in loading the tires now.

The guy I bought it from said the rear tires were loaded. I will have them checked to make sure. The rear is extremely light with a 5X5 roll of hay on FEL. It does handle better when roll is on 3 point spear also. Will be back in field tomorrow.
