I had a look at Windyacres tractor with the top cover off and I see where the detent slots in the fork slider rod are not spaced correctly to let the upper and lower 540 gears mesh together fully, actually only about half.

I ended up getting a little more engagement on the 540 shaft after sliding that shaft forward a little. Mine is done and up and running. I have more pictures from last night if they are needed. Just follow the steps backwards and it should go well though.

One more tip - The wiring harness for right hand side signal lights has an extra white wire. don't attach the white coming across the top of the fuel tank to it, that one goes to the aux light.
