A 2" pvc coupling and short section of pipe made a great tool for tapping in the PTO shaft. I do not have pics tonight but I also installed the gear shifter fork.

BTW - I found the spring and ball for the shifter fork in the oil when I scooped and soaked up the last of the oiul from that chamber. They must have dropped there when the shaft came out of the fork. I made a tool from 1/4" round stock to compress the spring while I reinstalled the cotter pin behind the spring.

It is descision time now. The mechanism needs some modifications to prevent a repeat.

options:

1. Keep both 540 and 1000 rpm functional. I need to move guide shaft for gear shifter fork forward to get better engagement. this will require a spacer behind the top link mount to prevent the shaft from later shifting back to original position becuase the set screw at the front of the shaft has proven inadequate, not only in the failure but also tonight while I attempted to set it up in the original configuration. Also need to address the fact that there simply does not seem to be enough vertical stoke in the the selector to securely seat the shifter into the 540 rpm detent. I took the shifter off the tractor tonight after putting the shafts and gears back in.

2. Dissable 1000 rpm. I would probably with 1/2" pipe spacers over the guide shaft for the shifter fork. not easiler reversible, but it is reversible.

Interesting, I wish I was there for the hands on. By the way, did the filters show up? I don't understand why they weren't delivered with the rest of the parts. Thanks again, for the play by play, and keep it coming.

well i have the cover off of my tractor and can see the gears. I am very thankfull to find that my top gear is fine. However the bottom fixed gear is half chewed up, due to the top gear not seating all the way into the bottom gear. I have not tore the gears or shifting fork out yet. I am going to call Galen on monday and see if he would like to stop over and see first hand what is going on with our tractors. I would be interested to know if this problem is more then just our tractors or not. And again thanks so much for the step by step and pictures.

I am working on mine tonight.

If upper gears are good, I think you can get lower shaft out without pulling the upper ones.

I may be too late, but if not : try moving them to nuetral and dropping the drawbar bracket off the outside of the tranny. My lower shaft pulled easy, so you may be able to do it without pulling upper one with a little wiggling.

Modifications to improve location of shifting detents and a modification to limit the machine to 540 were completed Friday.
1. In the first picture the drilled dimple in the shifting shaft (upper left corner of tranny case as seen in photo) was deepened to around 1/4" deep and then reinstalled.

2. Second picture is back side of bolted in blocking plate to keep it in 540.

3. Third picture shows front side of same bracket

4. Fourth picture is the bracket with blocking plate installed (as seen from back of tractor). Note the shifter extension that goes out into operator platform is left off.

5. The last picture shows the washer I used as a spacer to hold the shifting fork guide shaft slightly forward.

I got the fuel tank back in last night, that was a pain. The tank had relaxed while laying on the barn floor and bolt holes did not line up. It took over an hour to do that. After that I got the floor plate installed and replaced hydraulc filters. I cleaned alot of metal fines out of the filter housing. I hate changing that filter, the best way I found is to pull the whole housing off and do it on the bench then reinstall.
