Ballast 4110 Rear Ballast

I follow the manual regardling filled tires and the ballast box with 750 lbs of weights for heavy FEL work or digging...
3 pt implements (Blades, rakes, aerator) stay on for other lighter FEL work....bottom line ballast is real important

My 4410 arrives soon (no date yet, ordered last saturday).

Sounds like concrete in my ballast box is the consensus recommendation. Is this as simple as buying 7x100# bags of quickrete, filling the box with it and adding a bit of water?

Once you fill that ballast box with water it will be set forever. I prefer weights I can take out if I want to. I purchased old barbell weights in the 50# category and pile them up inside the box. A good source for these weights is "Play it Again Sports" stores. They sell used weights by the lb.
I also use some bags of concrete along with the weights. I started using just the concrete bags but there was not enough room in the ballast box to get enough total weight.

Stuart, how much weight can you fit in the box with the barbell weights?

I do not have a ballast box, but consider buying one every time I clip a tree or fencepost with my boxblade. I use my 60" boxblade and suitcase weights to ballast up to 900 pounds off the rear.

I have often thought that if I had a ballast box that I would cast several Portland cement "blocks" in length/width dimensions that would drop into the ballast box one on top of the other. I would consider casting re-rod into the blocks and allow for recesses where the re-rod could be easily used as handles. I suppose it would take six to eight cast blocks to make up a managable set. Building a few wood forms and mixing the cement would be pretty simple.

I use weightlifting plates with gravel to keep them from moving around and then 7 suitcase weights on top of the box. I put two 4" diameter pieces of PVC as long as the box is deep in the aft corners that I use for hauling pry bars, an axe, chainsaw, and any shovels, rakes etc. that I might need for the task at hand. With this rig I get the weight I need and also have a handy way of carrying things I need when out in the woods.

Koby: I presently have 8 50 lbs weights in the ballast box. Also put in 4 front weights (32 lbs each) and 4 bags of concrete at about 60 lbs per bag. When I get some more 50 lb weights I will remove the concrete which takes up a lot of space in the box.

When you got your ballast box, did it come with a pin for the top link. Mine just has the holes for the pin. I still have the BH on, so I can't really expirement. Am I expected to have this pin already for other implements?

Thanks for the help. I don't think I'm thread stealing since this is closely related. Well, I hope I'm not.

Cliff, that's not really "thread-stealing." More like misdemeanor hijacking /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes, you will need top link pins for various attachments as your arsenal grows. They are available in several lengths with different diameter lynch-pin holes. Just make sure it's a standard Cat 1 toplink pin. Your dealer has 'em, or you could pick one up at TSC for a few bucks. I have had implements delivered with them, and without them. You might just call your dealer and tell him he forgot the toplink pin and that you'll be by to pick it up when you get a chance. I doubt he'll charge you....
