I've got a new (1.5 weeks old) JD 4210 4wd with the standard syncshift transmission. The shift lever runs through a plastic piece that has an H-shaped slot routed out to guide the shift lever. What I've found is that when I shift it into 3rd, a lot of times it will go into reverse unless I make a concerted effort to pull the lever over towards me. I've already had a service man come out and work on it once. He replaced something, but it still does it. It's not as bad, but the problem remains. I don't think it's a transmission problem... just some kind of lever adjustment thing getting the shifting aligned with the guide. When I'm trying to shift to 3rd, the last thing I want to happen is for it to go into reverse. Anybody else out there with a syncshift transmission encountered this problem? Were you able to fix it?

I have a 4200 and had similar problems. I don't think the plate the shifter runs through is big enough. Mine finally broke and I don't have the problem anymore, but you do have to be careful not to get 3rd & reverse mixed up.

Another thing to watch for, there is a u-joint in the shifter linkage that tends to bind up, especially if you're working in a dusty area. I keep a can of WD-40 in the tool bin to squirt if the shifter gets fussy.

Good luck,

Bud

Bud,

Just curious... did your tractor have the shifting problem when it was new? Did you talk to the dealer about it? What'd they tell you? If you and I are the only ones that have encountered this, then I feel like it can be fixed. Or else you and I are the only ones with the shifter mounted next to the seat.

Makes me wish I'd just gone with the 790. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Arghh.

It shifted ok when new, a friend of mine also has a 4200, his shifted worse than mine. The dealer came by and lubed and adjusted. Mine works ok now, just need to shoot a little WD-40 after working in a lot of dust. I also know a guy with a 790, he's happy with it, but he wishes he got a 4000 series /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
