This summer I rebuilt the carb, installed new plugs and fuel filter. Toward the end of the summer I noticed it had to tn over more than usual to start. Now that colder nights are here I am having to turn it over a few times....wait and repeat until finally it starts. She runs fine once running and when the engine is hot she starts right up.

Approaching 500 hours....would a valve adjustment needed be the main cause here?

Rebuilt the carb. Ok, is there any choke mechanism to assist in enriching the mixture or adjustment?

Yes...has manual choke... it works and is used properly.

Yes. Adjust the valves. Mine needed it well before the recommended time. It ran much better after the adjustment.

It's a pain, but do it anyway.

For those that have adjusted the valves themself...any tips other than swear a lot?

The adjusting part is trivially easy if you've previously done a number of valve adjustments on assorted engines.

Turning the crank to just the right position? Not so much...

I've never done a valve adjustment...but seems fairly straight forward from the service manual. Guess I'll be swearing & drinking a lot! :)

Interesting....the pics are a bit blurred on my pc but appears you cut out the middle section of the rear tub area and somehow placed screen or mesh over it?

1/8'' aluminum plate with 3/16'' holes fastened with #18 self tapping screws, not shown was the plastic snap cover that covered the hole in the plastic engine shroud. I figured time and effort for modifications was well spent considering how difficult it is to properly adjust the valves
