422 robin engine blew up on 8/28/07

Given the choice of the Kohler or Honda replacement, I'd go for the Honda -- and my PT has a Kohler Command 25HP.

Both are very good engines, but I'd do this for one primary reason -- the Honda is much, much quieter...

I received the tractor on 09-22-2004 so that means it is out of warranty. I am leaning toward the 24HP Honda as long as it will physically fit within the frame I can design the retrofit kit and have the guys at the shop whip one out for me in short time.

With a Robin 22hp with apprx 300 hours I'm very concerned...other than regular oil/filter changes(synth. oil by the way) what other PM should I consider?

Does anyone have a Robin 22HP with more than 500 hours on it? It would be interesting to hear about this to see if one has ever lasted more than this or can we expect them all to fail at about 500 hours.

That's a great idea for an exhaust conversion. Did the conversion result in less noise than the original? ... noise is a problem with my 425. I'd like to make it as quiet as possible. I've been thinking of having a welding shop fabricate something like yours. .... where can one purchase a suitable muffler?

I have 607 hours on my 422 with Robin engine and it is running fine. There was a report of someone running one for 24/7 for almost 2 years when it blew. It was many hours (7000? if my memory is good).

I have heard good things about the super trapp muffler. You can get one from Jacks Small Engines. I have one on order (5S with resonator) and will let you all know how it works when I get it.

The Quiet Spark Arrestor Muffler

I am actually planning on making it a vertical installation instead of horizontal. I will start by just welding a 1-1/4 tube on the existing stub and clamping the muffler to it to see how I like the vertical orientation. If that works out, the next step will be to replace all of the exhaust header and go with a dual muffler setup.

I think replacing the header with a mandral bent tube and eliminating all the hard corners will pay great dividends in getting the heat out of the engine compartment.

The mufflers are standard 3" bullet type glass packs. I ordered the shortest ones available through my local auto parts store. They have a
1-3/4" inlet & outlet. I ordered the Super Trap arrestor tips( model (3-S ) from Jacks Small Engines. The dual setup lowered the noise level substantially and lowered the engine compartment temperature . The 180 also seemed to run a lot smoother after the conversion.

It was a fairly simple project, the hardest parts to fabricate were the exhaust flanges.
