I have a 2003 422 22 HP Robin engine. 650 hrs and going strong. I do use synthetic oil though. Usually Mobil 1 and change it out between 60 and 100 hrs. Recently for the first time after about 50 hrs. on the last oil change I did need to add 1/2 qt of oil. What kind of oil has every one else been using?

I am using Mobil 1 10W30 and change it and the filter at 50 hours. Just recently I have pulled the second oil drain plug on the right side of the engine as well as the normal oil drain plug when changing oil. The oil seems to start out cleaner and stays cleaner longer with that additonal 1/4 cup of oil drained. Pull the normal drain plug first and let it drain fully to minimize the mess.

Thanks bob I didn't know there was another plug. I will assume until I here other wise that Scarg wasn't using synthetic Oil. But I would like to know for sure. Man I would consider it bad luck if an engine goes out before 2000 hrs.
(synthetic oil or not) Knock on wood.

Been using Castrol synthetic 10-30 and change every 50 hours. Realize the oil is probably good for longer than that but the engine does not require much oil so it's not expensive to do and I believe the filter should be changed every 50 hours regardless of the oil being used. I do the same thing on my 98 Jimmy...synthetic oil changed out every 5000 miles along with the filter.

I think I'll pull both drain plugs next time...........

Steve,

nice of you to share this information with everyone so others might benefit. I'm sure it's depressing to talk about after what just happened to your engine. Probably has nothing to do with anything, I am curious were you using a cross referenced oil filter or the one PT sells ?
