JD 4300 HST 4WD
I have a 2002 4300 HST M4WD that has around 1200 hours on it. In the past year I've had an issue with the parking break light not wanting to turn off (even though I'm 100% sure the brake is off), and my cruise control switch won't stay on. I can hold down the cruise control switch and it will maintain cruise... but let off and the switch will turn off. Neither of those issues bothered me too much because they didn't affect how I used the tractor.

Just the other day I look down and my hour meter (digital of course) is just blank. Nothing. blank screen. I've got the entire service manual in print but must admit the electrical section is a little overwhelming. I just wondered if someone with experience could tell me if this is likely a meter gone bad or potentially a fuse, wiring??? Do these meters go bad occasionally? Hopefully it's something repairable as I need that hour meter of course.

The reason I'm mentioning the other electrical problems is in case there could be some "connection" with them.

Thanks

Brent

There could be a connection between the cruise control and the parking brake since when you apply the brake it will automatically release the cruise control. Can't help with the hours meter since I haven't had any problems it. Suggest calling the JD dealer to fix everything.

Suggest calling the JD dealer to fix everything.

Of course this works... but wouldn't that negate the need for the majority of this forum:scratchchin: Thanks for the reply though:thumbsup:

I have a 2002 4300 HST M4WD that has around 1200 hours on it.

The good news is this may be fixable, Brent.

Many many electrical signals come together in your dash display, and it has a large
connector that can fill with dirt. It is not too hard to pull the instrument cluster
back and pull the connector. Check both sides for dirt, and look inside to see if the
contacts are clean. Just plugging it back in may bring back all the correct signals.
Taking the cluster apart further is also not hard. If water has entered thru the lens,
you will want to reseal that. JD sells a new lens and new seal, but no other internal
parts of the cluster.

My first 4300 had a dead hour meter, and the only fixes were a new instrument cluster
($$$$), or an external hour meter. I did the latter.

My current 4300 is at 2025 hours and going strong.

Thank you sir! That gives me a starting point. I've had the panel off once before to do something??? I don't remember... but I do remember there being lots of caked up dirt/dust around everything. Didn't clean it up at the time. I'll start by pulling the panel and cleaning everything up.

I'm assuming I'll be able to identify the wires going to the meter? If so I guess I could use a voltmeter to check for voltage once the tractor is running.

I have a 2001 JD 4300 that I bought about 3 yrs ago. The hour meter stopped working about 2 yrs ago. I’ve tried the $250 non-OEM clusters but couldn’t get the glass seal to work without using my OEM glass and seal but then the glass would hit the gauge arms. I wasn’t going to pay $600+ for an OEM cluster just for the hour meter. I removed the cluster and opened it up. On the hour meter there was a white sticker with T1101AB2 229/01. I separated the circuit boards and had a closer look at the hour meter. I identified via the internet that it is an hour meter manufactured by ENM - T1101AB2. I found a replacement unit at Allied Electronics for $20 with $6 shipping. The meter has 4 solid wires labeled P, N, I, and R. Best I have determined P=positive, N=negative, I=input, and R=reset. I hooked up some jumper wires and 12-volt power source to the new unit and made it work (positive to P and I and negative to N and nothing on R). So, I tried the jumper wires to my old meter (the wires are exposed at the top of the white plastic spacer) and it didn’t work. So, I un-soldered my old unit and used the original white plastic spacer and soldered the new unit in. It has been working for 20 hours without any problems. I think it is fixed for $26. Hopefully it will last for a few yrs. You can run up the hours on the meter to match the hours on your tractor by just leaving the unit hooked up to a 12v batter prior to installing. Mine would have taken over 2 months so I just matched the hours since my last oil change (only 10 hrs).

:welcome: to TBN "malbert"

Thanks for posting and letting us know the fix, and thumbsup  to find the solution and getting it to work.

Malbert, you are the man! I never thought about component replacement that is more wallet friendly than the whole cluster. I cannot find the ENM - T1101AB2 on the Allied site, can only find ENM - T1101AB , notice the absence of the '2' at the end. What is the Allied part #? Thank you.

I looked at my invoice from Allied and it shows Stock# "70000909" and Mfr. Part# "T1101AB". Description is "Hour Meter, LCD, black, 1.2W x .6H, 8-28 VDC, DC, 6 digit". Price was $19.90 and with shipping and tax is was $28.27. It looks like the one you found is the one that I bought. Mine is still working great.

I guess the mystery is where the '2' was added, but no big deal. The Allied # matches, and price is identical, so I will order. Strange how the description of the item does not match identical to the specifications on their own site, by voltage or dimensions, but if yours fit and functions, who's to care, not me. Thanks again for the info and the dedication and knowledge to make the repair ourselves, I am certain I am not the only one who will use this information to make the repair.

Here's the link I found, let us know how it works for you wuntun

ENM Company - T111AB - 6 digit DC 8-28 VDC 1.2W x .6H black LCD Hour Meter - Allied Electronics

I'm wondering if this will work for our 5420?
Kyle, the link you found is the exact one I used to order from, thanks for posting it, as I do not know how to do that yet.
I would best guess since your 5420 is of the same year models as the 4x10's series made in Augusta, Ga. (2002-2004), that it may be the same part. I suppose you will have to take out the cluster and ID the meter like Malbert did for the 4x10's. The discrepancy I found is, and I quote:
"ENM Hour Meter, LCD, black, 1.2W x .6H, 8-28 VDC, DC, 6 digit"

then just below in the specifications notice the size and voltage difference:

Specifications
Dimensions : 1.3" L x 0.73" H
Display Digit Height: 5 mm
Display Type : Digital, LCD
Function : Hour Meter
Supply Voltage : 4.5 to 28 VDC VDC

Probably listing over-all size in specs, and display size in description, I ordered anyway since Malbert already used it and it works. Heck, this same meter might be used in many more tractors, since manufacturers like to buy in bulk. I might even order a couple more for other equipment I have that does not have an hour meter.

I ordered the meter from Allied on Sat. and received the meter on Thur., pretty darn fast! And while waiting on it to arrive, found this technical data page from ENM on the web. http://catalog.enmco.com/Asset/658.pdf
So the difference as stated earlier of discrepancy in dimensions, is explained on here the overall dimensions and display dimensions, and shows wiring diagram. As for the wiring up correctly, Malbert already figured this out through trial , but might give some peace of mind for some people. On another note: Call me o.c.d. but I keep records on all my equipment, so, I am going to hook mine up to a battery for 16.83 days to match original hours (404) before install. But, unfortunately, My FIL passed away (82 yr. old):( so we are going to be very busy with all that ensues with that for sometime.

Sorry for your family's loss.

Thanks for posting.

Thanks Kyle. Funeral was yesterday, so the immediate family and a few more left to go back home (500 miles away) this morning, as we were 'hosting' (living here) 13 people here for last 5 days! Got a lot of dishes and cleaning to do, thought I would get my mind off things for a bit on the web. I believe the last time with so much grieving was when my cousin was killed while using his tractor in Tyler, Tx. I think of him often. More often than I notice, until I say it, that's odd. Well I notice you are in Texas, if you find out your meter to be purchased from Allied, your shipping should be less than mine (mine was $7) because the package is from no less than Fort Worth, for what it's 'worth'.

Thats a lot of people to take care of for 5 days. How long you had your 4310? Had mine since Oct 2002

   / 4300 Hour Meter blank #19
Yeah, I believe we spent over $300 in groceries, not complaining, glad to do it, also glad wife likes to cook. :licking: Going out to eat would probably be in the thousands $.
To answer your question, I dreamed of owning a nice hydro 4x4 w/fel for decades, but trudged along for years with 1050s, 950, 790s, all 2wd, one w/loader. Finally got a sweet deal on my 2004 year model 4310 in 2010, only 210 hours. Original owner bought it in 2007 from dealer forclosure with 3.4 hours on it, go figure. Serviced well, but stored outside, plus the ~4 yrs at dealer, it was only 3 yrs. in service with PO. Very faded and dull, I have brought it almost to full glory new cosmetically! As from why the low hours I put on it?, because I only use it if I need loader or 4wd or both. I put about 200 hrs. year combined on 3 tractor current herd. If you have had yours since new, you know how expensive an investment it is!

Sorry I missed your posting earlier. On my tractor, I removed the instrument cluster and then removed the circuit boards from the plastic case. I looked at the sides of the hour meter and there was a white sticker with the model numbers on it. I actually took a picture and zoomed in to see the numbers. Mine had more numbers than the T111AB but I took a chance that it would work. Mine has been working for 32 hours. If it looks like it has the same dimensions it will most likely work.
