4300 neutral safety switch

   / 4300 neutral safety switch #11
My 4300 is an HST so don't know if this applies? Its neutral switch is located under the floor board by the forward/reverse pedals on the right side of the tractor. It is engaged/disengaged by linkage to the pedals. Had trouble with it and solved the problem by installing a ban clamp. The thickness of the clamp was just enough to depress the switch.

Hmmm ok I have been reading this because I think my neutral switch just went out. I have had to "rotate" the forward /reverse handle to get the starter to engage, now nothing. I did not see that the actual location of the switch was ever found... am I missing something?

On an HST the switch is approximately 1 foot to the left of the forward/reverse pedals. But since you mention "forward/reverse handle" I'm assuming your 4300 isn't an HST?

You might find this YouTube video helpful SyncReverser Forward and Reverse Repair JD 43 recovered part 6 - YouTube

It shows where the switch is located and how to replace related parts

thanks yes I have watched that one, still cant find the switch, mine isnt hydrostatic, I have a feeling I might just have to haul it into the dealer... Ive been able to keep it alive for 15 years now of hard use I guess thats a good run. I have looked all over that thing and cant find anything. So another quick question, is that switch just preventing the starter motor circuit from kicking in ... if I hot wire the starter can I get it running enough to get it on the trailer?

You could bypass the switch - but I wouldn't. Starting in gear is asking for transmission trouble and / or starter gear and flywheel damage. But if you are positive it is in neutral and you just want to load it; it's your call.

I see various suggestions based on transmission types. Is it a SyncShift, Hydrostatic, or SyncReverser? (9 gear, 12 gear, or infinite gear) TractorData.com John Deere 43 tractor transmission information

There is a relay in the fuse box that is the starter disable relay. If you make up a 3" long wire with male 1/4" spade terminals crimped on each end and replace the relay with that, you'll be able to just use the key to start it and it bypasses the seat switch, pto switch, and nss. I have a hydro tractor so I'm not as worried about starting in gear and did that when I started having intermittent problems with some safety switch I couldn't track down.
