4300 Won\'t Start

I tried to start my 4300 this morning and all I got was a clicking sound. I checked the battery with a volt meter and it showed 12 volts. I also checked the cables to make sure there was good contact with the battery terminals, and it showed 12 volts also. My last ditch effort was to try jumper cables to my truck, that didn't work either. I used it last weekend without any problems. And I'm positive it's not in gear, and the PTO isn't engaged. It sits in a garage which rarely gets below freezing.

Any ideas on what to check next? I'm far from a mechanic, but I don't mind getting dirty. And off course the loader is hooked up which makes it that much harder to get to anything from the sides.

Thanks - Tom

Tom
The last time someone posted that a JD would not start. The suggestion was to check and tighten the ground cable. That fixed my problem and the person’s tractor that had the problem. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: 4300 Won\'t Start

The clicking sound is the solenoid not receiving enough juice or bad ground. Try bypassing the solenoid or battery cables by using a good set of booster cables (heavy duty). Try the ground side first then the positive. Make sure you get a good ground try several places. Do not remove your cables just double up. Cables some time corrode inside the casing. Try to boost off another twelve volt battery first to eliminate a bad battery.

Re: 4300 Won\'t Start

My 4600 sometimes give me starting fits. It's a power reverser, and I had to have the shuttle lever readjusted, as when the key was turned, the starter just clicked. I've also knocked the P.T.O. safety wires loose several times. They're located above the hydraulic filter.Check and make sure the P.T.O. switch isn't engaged, if there have been any kids around they've been playing on your tractor.
