4310 Hood

Getting ready to do some grading on the road this evening, and thought I'd check the oil level & such real quick before heading out.

Went to close the hood, felt a little resistance and then it shut WAY to easy.

Long story short the bracket (molded to hood) that connects to the hood tilt mechanism broke.

Tractor has 78 hours on it, and is 5 months old. Is this a warranty issue, or am I out the cost of a new hood?

It's my first new tractor, and I'm not sure what to expect out of the dealer, who I will be calling in the morning

Your waranty is printed on the back of the yellow "Customer Purchase Order for John Deere Products" that you received when you took delivery of your tractor.

See parts B and C for details of what is and isn't covered.

I would expect the hood to be repaired or replaced under the terms of the warranty.

Am sure you will get full warranty. My impression of the new hood on the 4410 I looked at was real iffy. I hear that keeping some WD-40 or similar is helpful.
Let us know what happens, please.

KD; I have a 4300 and got part of a limb wedged under the bottom of the hood and it popped up like an infield fly ball and broke the latch. I welded the latch back and then glued it to the top of the hood. Try the warranty route ist. Mine was driver error but you may fare differently. If not cost of new hood for the 4300 was in the 500$ range. I would go topless ist. My repairs worked and are not visible. Hood does not lock down perfectly every time however.

From the posts I am assuming the hood on the 4300 is fiberglass, tsk,tsk....I have an older 4100 and it has a real hood....... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Just got off the phone with the dealer, they are investigating, but sounds like they will be sending me a new hood.

Yeah, it's the fiberglass hood, broke where it bolts to the hinge\pivot mechanism.

Going to send some dig pics to the dealer (an hour away), but it sounded like they would just order a replacement.

Looked it up on JD Parts.................$232.00........ouch

Will keep all posted......

Yup, its plastic, not glass, and I'll take it anyday over a "real" hood.

There seems to be a running change on the latch assembly that owner of newer units are having issues with...

The reason I say plastic is I got a good look at the hood all over my yard after 5 bundles of shingles fell out of the bucket onto the hood. I am glad my homeowners took care of the replacement.
I like the plastic hood too.

My hood got stuck open at the dealer's yard before I even bought the tractor. Some silicon spray now and again is a good remedy. It helps with the tilt-steering assembly too and doesn't attract dirt like WD40.

I had a similar problem on a JD 4600, I was wondering if perhaps it was damaged from a sticking latch that holds the hood up, or when I lifted the gas can up to fill the tractor.

Update.................

I talked to the dealer yesterday. The new hood & stickers have come in. I have to take the old hood off, and swap it out for the new one.

You got to love it when a plan comes together...............
