Well, CIDERTOM, you pretty much ruled out excessive hyd pressure
since you have TWO relief valves when using tractor hydraulics.

I replaced a 1.75" rod on a 10.5' Prairie Dog hoe last year and I never
really found out how it got bent. That bothers me as I don't want it
to happen again!

Cidertom; I'd sure like to see some pics of your gauge setup when you get it done. Words can explain things but a photo sure helps cement the idea in my simple head!

Another question that comes to mind with this kind of problem -- rod failure -- anybody ever seen a rod bend or break in a spot where it had been nicked or scratched? Like scoring glass or steel; it will break or bend in a location that has been gouged or scored.

How did you come out on your search for another source of replacement cylinders? I believe that Ameriequip builds the backhoes for Deere. I don't think they will sell retail parts or equip to individuals, though.

That sure would be a good bit of info to have for future reference, too!

And did ya get all those stumps out of the ground?

Thanks,

AKfish

Small update:
Took cylinder to dealer today, I have rebuilt cylinders in past, but time is too crunched right now for me to do it. Salesman saw me and asked how everything is going. Showed him cylinder. He wanted pix, said that shouldn't be able to happen. He will be taking it to Deere rep to see if they can help (I'm not holding breath) with cost of rebuild.

AKFish:
yep all out of ground, the last one was a beast with having to excavate with FEL. I wound up using a mini-dumptruck with a load of dirt as one end of a 2:1 advantage haul system. Now I have 5 huge-ish stumps that I have to knock rocks out of and cut up. That project is now on hold as the terracing project again has top priority. Once the "soil" around here dries out, it is more like concrete than anything else, and I have to resculpt a 150' x 50' area from a 6-9 ft side to side level change to a 2 ft level change.

I had the same thing happen to my 448. It bent almost the exact same way when I was removing a stump. They wanted to lower my hydraulic pressure. But I wouldn't let them. My # 7 hoe on my 790 removed stumps better than my 448 and I didn't want it any lamer. My dealer did cover it and repaired it.

You have a good dealer, RRACING.

I agree that any of these hoe attachments should handle the 2500psi
these CUTs can deliver. Some are actually running at much lower
pressure. Have you put a pressure guage on your hoe?

That's encouraging that the dealer would offer to take your problem "up the hill". Time will tell if they will work with you on addressing the rod failure. Sure hope so...

Well, you'll have a bit of dirt to move, won't ya'! Bring everything up to 2', from 6'-9'. (Probably have to forget about using the wheelbarrow...)
