One to slow him up to get a good shot, then
One to remove him as a threat.

This is what i am going to experiment with:

44 Magnum Shotshells

way more universal than 45/410.

The method in the link would be MUCH less expensive than the plastic capsule shot containers. Plus, when crimping there would not be a chance to crack/shatter the plastic since there is none.

One suggestion about the glue for the end filler: Use hot melt glue to seal the end. It is fast drying and blows out the barrel cleanly. I use hot melt when reloading 12ga shotgun shells and come across a case that doesn't want to crimp correctly.

In fact, I'd bet that you can just fill the end with hot melt without an end wad. Just squirt it on the lead pellets. It would dry on the top layer and break up under the acceleration when fired.

Loved it! That has to be about the coolest article I have read in a while!. Now to get some 12 shot!

As mentioned in an earlier post, the shot size is up to you and can be customized. I use #9 and #12 about 50/50 by volume. The #9 shot reaches farther, causes more damage, and penetrates much better (more residual energy). While the #12 shot is for close in and a dense pattern. The combo is perfect for rats out to about 15 yards and should be just fine for snakes. Consider what you are shooting and go from there.

I have one of those pistols. It's a Taurus model 4519 Judge Public Defender
with a two inch barrel (rifled). It's presently loaded with two 410 gauge
2.5 inch 6shot bird-shot; two 410 gauge 2.5 inch 4 pellet 000 buckshot;
and one 45 long colt (in that order). It's in a Fobus clip-over-the-
waistband holster.
The gun with ammo and holster weighs 2 pound 4 ounces. Rather heavy.

I have a 45/410 Circuit Judge long gun. It is a fun gun but I have never used it with shot shells. I have used 410 slugs and they don't fly very well but the .45 rounds do and are quite accurate. I'm not saying it is the best thing on the market and if your task is one dimensional (killing snakes) then I would be inclined to buy a gun that excels at that. I don't have any experience with shooting snakes and the only time I used shot shells in a .22 was for killing chipmunks next to the house. Worked good out to 10'.

Count on a .410 slug (ie: Brenneke # A2115638, ~110g/1/4 oz @ 1700+ fps = ~750 ft/lb ME) to give pretty much the same oomph as a '.357 Maximum' with with the same bullet wt. (Hornady #8 manual, 110g XTP @ 1500-2000fps = 550-975 ft/lbs)

Good enough for deer or black bear at, say bow range... snakes any day, if you can hit one with a slug. I'd want 9-shot with the CCI shot capsules in .44 Mag, 8-shot or .45 Colt (250g LRN) in my .45/.410 (... just what I've been using). 6s in a SG for longer range. :)

(Hey, PM or stop by for a 'shoot' if your ever in the nabe ...)

Thanks for that link! It's supposed to rain here all day, I just might try loading up a few to try out.

Today was interesting. Outside dogs were doing the "there is something wrong" barking. Yes it is different.
Today was the 3rd snake of the season. First 2 were the friendly type. Today was the first Rattle Snake of the year. It was under the house as were the dogs live.

It would have been nice to have a .22 cal as it was 4 to 5 feet away. Anything else would have deafened the dogs. Got a weed chopper and gave as good a whack as possible where it was at. Tried to drag it out, but it got away & hid. Got a real long handled rake to try & uncover it or drag it out. Poke & prod and it would rattle, 1/2 way under the house & still could not find it.

Was at that for about an hour. In a little while the rattle changed. Start off strong & sort of peter out. The way this went, I believe it was mortally wounded. Not a normal thing for a rattler. At this point I believe it is dead under the house. Dogs live there most of the time. Only 1 short little woof & no more. No sign that it came out or got away.

Still think I want to get a "Pepper box" revolver, some 3 or FFG powder & load with bb's. Play around with different loads. Cork wad on top of the powder. Not sure about the top at the moment.
