Fellow Posters,

About one month ago I posted a question about the large frame 4000 series John Deeres. My question was that my dealer was trying to convince me of the benefits of a large frame machine, and said that he was getting a shipment of 4000 series machines in soon. Well, it happened. He called today and said a 4520 had arrived with ehydro and R4 tires. Pricing was not discussed. I currently have the 3720, with which I am extremely pleased. I have no complaints about my current machine. About 100 hours so far, and doing fine. My main questions are: is even looking at such a machine even worth doing? Second, with regard to power, is the 4520 as potent as my 3720, especially on the hills and grades we have here? Third, what am I thinking, the 3720 machine is even more than I need (but not necessarily more than I want)? Finally, would there be much difference in performance between a 4520 and a 4720? I realize five horsepower, but my only PTO driven attachment is a 72" RFM which either machine would easily power. As far as box blading, etc. would that small amount of power be noticable, and would the large frame machine do notably better than my current hoss? On caveat, my dealer is a long drive from here, so I try not to demo something unless I am REALLY sure I want it-- which I am not at this point; if I do decide to do something I may get a better price on the 4520 because it is on the lot v. waiting or having him locate a 4720 if I decide I do want a large frame. I suppose my biggest concern is trading a machine I like for one that looks good on paper, but with which I have limited personal experience. There is nothing that my 3720 will not do that I need it to, but it is always nice to look. Thanks for the advice.

Hi John Im no expert on tractors, in fact I dont even own one yet /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif But if you dont mind I will share my thoughts. A lot of attention has been givin on these forums concerning tractor sizing. Your 3720 is A great machine, but I get the feeling from your most recent posts that you really wanted the large frame from the start /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I could understand A smaller tractor for cleaning stalls , primarily mowing , if ones budget was tight , or working in tight wooded areas. Other than that I personally feel the large frame is the way to go.Its built stronger and has more of that "tractor" feel. I will be getting A 4320 for my small 4 acres. I know most folks would feel thats A huge waste but when I swing the barn door open on A saturday morning to do some work on my tractor, ill be happy knowing I made MY own choice and it was MY MONEY that paid for it. So John for you I vote for the 4720. Mike

I had a 790 that is close in size (Frame) as the 3720 . I have some very hilly property and found it unstable in many areas here. I bought a 4320 and it is much more stable espically with a load. The funny part is that the 2 tractors have very close turning radius and so far haven't had a problem with tight spots like I thought I would. The Extra loader capacity is Great !!!

Hi Jim, I see from your bio you use your 4320 on 4 acres. If you dont mind me askin how that size tractor works for you
? I dont have hills on my property but im the same size. John have you ordered your 4720 yet? Mike

Hi Mike.

The 4320 is much stabler than the 790 I use to own. It suprises me on how much difference a little weight and wheel base really makes. I do a lot of volunteer work locally with it and I'm tickled with its loader ability and horse power. The biggest problem now is traction. The only real thing I think JD could improve on is the exhaust , I think it could be quieter like the 3X20 series, But I will take it for its extra ponies. Its maneuverabiltiy is Great! its not a hole lot different than my old 790 witch is unbeliveable for its size.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Jim, what tires do you have? Im thinking R1s would suit me fine as I wont be cutting grass. But will on occasion drive on the yard. My land is A flat over grown corn field w/ sumac trees starting to creep in. There are alot of ifs on tires I just want to choose the correct ones. How does the 448 hoe work? I cant wait till spring to get mine. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mike,

I am not Jim to whom your question was addressed-- so forgive me for jumping in with an opinion-- and do not own a 4000 series (yet) but I can say almost all the 4000's I have seen have the R4 tires. They really get good traction and seem to wear better because the wear areas are broader, which is handy for such a heavy machine. The other nicety is that they will hold a lot of liquid ballast due to their volume. I do not know specifics, but I suspect they would hold several more gallons of ballast, which really helps with a loader, and in challenging terrain. The other thing is that the stability that I noted the other day when getting some limited saddle time on the 4520 would be greater with the R4 tires, because they do make the machine a bit wider. Of course you can widen the R1 shod wheels too, but then you would have a row crop machine. Now back to counting those pennies, just a few thousand more, and that 4720.....

Thanks John, and feel free to jump in at any time. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I think you are on the money concerning the R4s. I guess I like the "looks" of the R1s vs the praticality of the R4s. I just had ankle surgery and will be out of work until the end of oct. then in mid jan. I go in for rotor cuff surgery. I will have plenty of time to research. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Im already considering the 4720 myself. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
