Has anyone installed their 46BH themselves? I just bought one (supposed to be in May 1st), and couldn't see paying ~$500 to have it installed. I may regret it, but I kind of like to really understand things and I've found I learn the most by doing! I have a power beyond kit I need to install first. I just wondered if anyone knew any tricks or things to watch out for. Thoughts or comments appreciated- Jason

No Takers? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Ok, well I guess I'll just hope for the best...

46BH Owners- Do you need the taller upper ROPS? It looks to me as if you would sit behind the ROPS when on the BH? I don't want it if I can get away without it because of door heights. Anyone know?

Thanks- Jason

I have the taller ROPS on mine but I do not know if it would be a problem without it. My hoe was dealer installed so I cant help you out with that either. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

The taller ROPS is a folding ROPS. The short one may not hit you on the head, but the point of a ROPS is to protect you. If your head is higher than the ROPS, what's it protecting? Depends on your priorities as to whether you get the tall folding ROPS or not. And also on if you think you will ever bother to use the seatbelt when on the BH or not.

Dealer installed mine, so I can't help your installation either. Sorry.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I will just wait and see on the taller upper ROPS. Mine does fold down now, but I can get it in an 8' door without folding. A taller one would have to be folded, and I might forget!! If it is needed for safety, though, I will order one.

You wouldn't be the first one to do that.

I had a 4115 with a 46 bh and the taller ROPS was ordered and installed. The height difference between the standard ROPS and the ROPS that is recommended for the backhoe is 2in. I would recommend you save your money and just go with the factory installed ROPS. NOW, I just put the 46 backhoe on my 2520, after a lot of problems. When the dealer tried to install the backhoe, the left forward loader frame pin was off by 1/2 a hole. The right forward pin was okay. The frame was out of alignment from the factory. The dealer sent the frame to a welding shop. They cut and rewelded the left forward subframe attach point. Backhoe mounts okay, but the distance between the left and right side of the backhoe and wheels are off by 1.5 inches. BUT it mounts and I can now use my backhoe after waiting 2 months for a new frame from JD.

Good Luck

Thanks Dave- and welcome to TBN!!

I did not order the taller ROPS, and it sounds like I'll be all right!

Bad deal about your probems with the subframe on your 2520. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Are you still getting a new frame, or is the dealer considering your problem fixed?

Hope you get as much good info from the good people on this site as I have.

JasonL,

You won't need the tall Upper portion of the ROPS unless you're over 6' tall; I'm 5 10' and have not hit my head anywhere yet! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif. I ordered mine but it's still in the shed on a shelf! I had the same issue as you with short doors, so I opted not to install it for now.

There are some issues with the 46 backhoe installation on
the tractors, especially if you have a hoe with the older
subframe. What they have done, is change the subframe
to fit both the 2520 or 4115, but, the older frame from the
4115 won't fit up to the 2520 as it is. Also, in this change, they have all new mounting where the loader tubes are. With the 410 loader, it's different than with the 200CX loader. Also,
with the change, there are different brackets and assembly instructions depending on whether you have the 4115 with 200CX, or 2520 and 200CX.. The info from deere isn't very clear on this yet... but hopefully they will get it ironed out.
Most dealers are finding ways to modify what they have,, usually in the loader mounted brackets... to make them fit
their tractors.
There was also some tire interference in what we did, and we ended up trimming the backhoe operator platform to make clearance for the tires...

Oh well, I guess I'll find out.

Thanks

Dutch-

Thanks for the info.
It sounds like maybe you dealers are earning your money.
I have a 2003 4110 with 410 loader. Should this be a problem?
I haven't talked to the dealer lately, but supposedly the hoe will be in May 1st. I guess I'll see how it goes.

Thanks- Jason

As long as you get the right subframe for your tractor,
and it is verified to fit your tractor,, with your loader,
which is probably the 410, you should be all set..

Success!!! How sweet it is!! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I picked up my BH and subframe last evening. I spent about 3 hrs then, and 2 more tonight, and she looks like she'll dig!

I installed the power beyond last weekend- that was probably the hardest part (very tight space to work)

No instructions came with the subframe, and seeing as I had never even seen the BH prior, that was interesting! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Printed off a parts schematic from JDParts, and soon had her whipped.

The only hard part of the BH install was the weight (750lbs) My 2 brothers helped me slide the pallet off of the trailer.

I have some pictures- if there is interest I can post.

I would certainly recommend anyone who thinks they can to install the BH themselves- it was fun!

Now off to DIG!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I am still about 2 months away from buying my backhoe. Those two pallets look like x-mas to me and the big green one even has giftwrap over the seat. Several posters have convinced me to try to do the installation myself. It will be like x-mas morning using tin snips to cut the banding on those pallets in a couple months.
