has anyone ever bothered with extending the basic warranty a year or two? 

Odds are, they make more money for the manufacturer than what they save you.

One insurance that I think will pay off is always getting all your fluids and filters from the dealer, if you aren't having them do the maintenance. Have a record showing you are maintaining it at least to factory specs. If a problem does arise, you don't want it blamed on the oil you save $5 on, or even worse, the the Voodoo Oil you overpaid $25 on...

I'm hoping my timing is good - either I get to choose from a proven model or have a chance at 'new and improved'. My concern is that my definition of 'improved' seems to be diametrically opposed to the manufacturer's definition 95% of the time. Still, there is always hope.

There is close to a $1000 rebate right now on the 'old' models so that probably closes up the price differential a bit.

I'd like my quote even better if that was an MX6! That was the unit I was leaning toward up to now but in all honesty I'm not going to be cutting anything that heavy - just keeping former hayfields under control - and they were cut up to last fall so there's no real problem with woody growth (yet).

I don't have much in the way of 'brushy' areas to cut - our property is either pretty open or mature woodlot. (I've got some cherry trees over four foot in diameter) so I'm not going to be clearing any more land, just keeping field/pasture under control.

Your reasoning is exactly the same as mine. I am not cutting heavy brush, so I went with the LX. Problem is, it is so light that swinging wide and accidently bumping a tree would be likely to "do it in" Hitting a hidden rock would likely "do it out". I am very happy with the MX6 an it does a better job at just grass than the LX.

If you were to get the LX and it does fine for you, that's great. I at least told you what I experienced and don't have to regret not speakin' up.

Wellll... long before any dotted line is signed I will get a definite quote on the MX6. As I said, 'mentally' that's the model I had penciled in (if a Deere cutter at all). The dealer just put an LX6 on the quote for a starting point. When I asked about how much more it would be going to the MX series his answer was 'about double' so I didn't pursue at that point. However, in looking at the prices folks here have been getting - sounds like it may be more like only a 50% increase. In any case I'll have him work up a real quote on an MX6 before I commit.

Also - have to find out if the ballast box qualifies as the '2nd implement' for the rebate. If so - then I could also consider a Land Pride cutter. I see lot's of feedback on their finish mowers - anyone have any experience with the rotaries?

I agree with you 100% I never put anything but JD fluids in my tractor until after the warranty expired.

Well, dealer called today and said he can get me a 4710 reverser without too much trouble if I want to go that route. He's going tomorrow to find out about the 4720 and will call me Friday with the scoop. Looks like it's going to be one of the two!

Don't know what all was said here b/c I didn't read everything. Anyways, get the heavy duty bucket, fill the tires, get the third scv, and I wouldn't listen to the dealer about burning up the hydro. I have only ever owned hydros and you cannot get any better than one. Deeres is far superior than anyon elses. Don't get the light duty cutter you WILL regret it. I am not so sure I would get the mx6. Mine started to come apart after one season. It mows nice but too pricey for how hevy of a cutter that it really is. I would check out the MD and HD bush hogs. Lot less price lot more mower. Get all the options you wnat now don't add stuff later. You will simply toss your money away by getting light duty stuff. These tractors are very fast and powerful. You WILL destroy and light stuff you buy I assure you. BTW I paid 26000 for my 4710 with loader, hd bucket, all the options in the book, fluid in the tires, Balast box, and MX6. I really liked the tractor but they just need to reinforce the loader arms some more. I racked mine slightly working it. I will find the weakest link on anything. And I didn't find too many on the tractor. It will work circles around any other comparable tractor. If you want any specifics quesetion answered or weaknesses I have probable found all of them so just IM me or post another message.
