I just bought a Kubota B7300. I am looking for a 4 ft. brush hog. And websites I should look at? Any suggestions? I don't need anything too heavy duty. I will be cutting grass about 1 - 2 ft tall. Maybe a little more depending on what my buddies and family need work on!!

Thanks for any info you can provide.

Really depends on how much you want to spend and how long you expect to keep the cutter (is there a probability up moving to a larger tractor within a few years?)

Anyway, for a lower priced model, King Kutter and Howse are the ones I'm familar with... I'm sure either one will do the job quite well, if it's just grassy type cutting.

I personally like Land Pride. They cost considerably more then either of the brands I mentioned above. I have a 60" unit that goes into heavy brush and saplings with no problem, although some passes require me to run it less then the full width of the cutter. I do expect to keep this cutter for many years or unless I go more then 10 acres.

There ya go..one man's opinion. I'm sure you'll get more...

I would buy whatever you can find locally that has a flexible toplink bracket. You should find a 4 footer for around $500-$600.

David, How does your bx22 handle the 5' cutter. I have seen a number of used 5' cutters but rarely a 4'. I always figured that 5' was to big for my bx23. It would be graet if I could use a 5'.

Thanks guys. I am new to tractor ownership so forgive me if I sound like I don't know what I'm talking about! I see some have a shear pin and some a slip clutch. I'm sure the slip clutch is the better way to go, but I don't really want to break the bank on one. I would imagine one with a shear pin (or bolt) would be just fine as long as you didn't exceed it's limits?

Thanks.

I went with a shear pin drive on the LX4. The slip clutch was $100. Figured shear pin is fine based on seeing my neighbor's 30 year old JD 820 with brush hog working fine with shear pin only, even with totally dull blades.

My LX4 manual has a caution in it to not start it up at full speed, as it could shear the pins. I try to remember to throttle down before shutting down and throttle down before starting up. Makes a helluva racket starting it full speed.

The manual also says that the slip clutches can get kinda glued together if left to sit and rust. They require maintenance to keep them working right. May be why Gravely put theirs inside in oil on their later models.

I got used to starting at slow speed with the Gravely. Can't get the PTO in gear except at low speed, and need to throttle it down before shutting the PTO down (but not critical), as it spins forever shut down at speed.

Shear pin should be fine. I have had rotary cutters with both. Only once did I break a shear pin and that was when the blades hit a mound of dirt. Slip clutch may prevent a little less shock to the PTO if you hit an obstacle. However if you leave the bushhog outside in the weather you should adjust or check the slipclutch periodically to make sure it is working properly and not frozen with rust. The manual for a JD 517 rotary cutter I had once owned gave good instructions on this. I have owned a WOODS brushbull 4' cutter with slipclutch and liked the quality and cut. The other brands mentioned above are good and have readily available replacement parts such as blades.
