Just an observation, I look at a lot of Youtube videos for advice on how to perform different functions and tractor comparisons and I notice that almost every tractor I see has an ordinary bucket, most of these videos are USA based.
Here just about every tractor you see has a 4in1 and I must admit I would be lost without mine with all the extra tasks I can perform.
Is there a resistance to 4in1's or is it Youtube are not portraying an accurate cross section of the community?

Money factor maybe? I ran a track loader with one already and it was great.

I have never seen a 4in1 bucket on anything but construction equipment.

I suspect it is a price competition thing, selling tractors to people who don't realize how useful they are. I've not seen it even as an option when I was looking at new, just aftermarket.

A 4 in 1 is a great tool for the tractors that are a bit bigger than most that are discussed here. The problem with one on a little CUT is the extra weight limiting your lifting capacity. At least that is why I didn’t get one for my machine.

I recently got a Kubota 4in1 bucket for my B21 backhoe. Should have got it long ago. Super useful. It weighs 450 lbs compared to about 250 lbs for the standard buckets. I don't notice a problem with weight lifting but if I did could just put the standard bucket back on for that chore.

That thing looks pretty knarly. I have never seen one or done any investigation of a 4in1. What exactly do they do in addition to the capabilities of a standard bucket?

There are a fair number of older TBN threads discussing these buckets in comparison to regular buckets and grapples. Google search does a better job bringing them up than the TBN search function.

Landscaping is probably the job that the 4in1 bucket is most useful for.

Picking up a pile of materials you can get the last handful of gravel or mulch in the bucket, with the right technique combining the curl/dump functions with the clamshell functions. Versus pushing it around with a regular bucket and then shoveling it in by hand.

Another function is grading, whether backdragging or going forward. It is hard to describe in words but the 4in1 has much more versatility and effectiveness on dirt moving/smoothing, compared to a regular bucket. You can use either the clamshell or the short bucket, going forward or back. And the extra weight is a help here. You can do a better job faster. It can also be used to doze up dirt pretty well, at least with a strongly built industrial style backhoe.

For clearing bushes and small stumps you can chomp down on them and pull up, easy peasey. Similarly for grabbing debris or small logs and branches.

For building a pile of rubble or trash, or loading same into a dump trailer, the 4in1 can be used as a bottom dump rather than tilt-dumping a regular bucket, this gets you an extra amount of height that is very useful.

The only thing I use the regular bucket for is - because it holds more - moving material and distributing it. I also have a grapple, that is much better at brush and roots.

I guess I would say that the 4in1 is like a swiss army knife compared to a bowie knife. Does quite a number of things pretty well that the straight knife cannot do.

I'd never heard of such an implement until I joined TBN. I've not seen one being used by a homeowner or construction in this area. I would suggest that unfamiliarity with the implement might also be the reason they are scarce. Also price. The salesman is most interested in getting a new customer into a tractor, first.

That, in and of itself, can be the overall goal for the salesman. Implement purchase will follow as the homeowner becomes familiar with his new purchase.

Still - after owning a tractor for 37+ years - I'm not familiar with any type of 4-1 bucket system.

As I remember - most, but not all - 4-1 systems are designed for skid steer operations.

That's odd. I have never seen one on a skid steer but have seen many of them on track machines. Not on too many new machines but plenty of old crawlers.

^^ The only place I ever remember seeing pictures of anything similar is on the old style extremely large 'steam shovels' in gravel, mining or coal pits.

My Ford TLB has one. It's handy.

I have a bucket/grapple on my Kubota. It's better.

Either is many times more versatile than a straight bucket.

There are other things tractor and attachment related that seem to be more popular in Europe. Examples would be self-leveling loaders, cushioned loaders and front 3PH. I'm sure there are several others.

I find it useful for picking up logs, posts and metering sand and gravel not to mention pulling out posts, small stumps and shrubs.
Came as a package from Kubota when I bought it for the same price as a standard bucket.
Almost every tractor sale yard we see have most of their stock with 4in1's including the unknown chinese brands at ridiculous low prices.
Don't know how it compares but I paid AU$19990 2 years ago for the BX2370 with 4in1, coould have had a chinese 50hp 4WD with 4in1 fot AU$14000.00, did look but they were miles apart in quality.

EA shows a few different ones, but their prices are insanely high. Something like $2,500 for the 54" SCUT version.

Cost? I can see where that might be more useful to some of us than a grapple.

The price at several northern California dealerships was $2100. I looked for a couple years for used, the only thing available is worn out and very heavy skid steer implements for about 3/4 of new price.

I looked at the EA buckets too. The smallest one is about 570lbs, much more than the Kubota bucket. The Kubota 4in1 bucket (L2244) is sold with L series tractors and the bucket comes with a brochure that says the warranty is no good if you use it on larger machines.

I guess I would ask, "insanely high" compared to what? I did not find anyone giving these things away.

For what it is worth, I considered making one from scratch. That would be less expensive if you only count the cost of steel. It would have been an interesting project. But I decided I did not need another project, what I need is to get some work done.
