You mean those kindof flat things with grommets made out of canvas or plastic or something? Do you get an instruction manual with those? C'mon, John! You've seen the controls; don't you think moisture could impact longevity/performance of those switches, even if we do garage our machines?

BTW, I think I have heard of those "tarp" things -- have to have my servants investigate various applications aroung the mansion.

As soon as Muhammad and I saw those switches… that was our first question to the John Deere rep… Time will tell… but there has to be something more than meets the eye here… I don’t think John Deere would “slap” something together… I’m sure they did their homework and “field work” on this one… /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Seems to me that some sort of cover could be fabricated to keep the weather out of them, even when the tractor is in use. Maybe something as simple as the cover that is used on the other fender as sort of a "glove box". I would be looking into this if I were to purchase one...I'd always be worrying about them when I'm out in the weather. I don't stop working for rain or snow, and you just KNOW that it would have an effect. I was surprised that they werent made with some sort of rubber cover enclosing the switch altogether...as it is, water WILL run down into it, to freeze in winter, preventing use of the switch. Gotta be an easy way to keep that from happening...

Bill:

I agree with your thinking on those switches. Perhaps a flexible plastic cover such as some keypads have. JD will come up with something.

Pic of another nice spot. Used to be able to ride in on mountain bikes. 25 kilometers one way with about 3000 ft altitude gain. Had to carry bikes for about 1/2 kilometer up on a headwall but could ride down. Parks have closed it to Mountain bikes now.

I do remove the key but do not have a lighter. Use the torch instead cause quite often it still remains frozen after I get the key in.

Bill --

<font color=blue>"...I really WANT my JD4310, but also feel I should consider all the angles."</font color=blue>

I've been in this predicament myself for over 2 years. I've looked at JD, Kubotas, NH, and Masseys. In all these brands, I almost always see something that makes me second guess. They're almost always little things that I see possibly balooning into big things -- true or not, I don't know. But, for me what it's coming down to is brand name and reputation. I have 2 JD lawn tractors, 111 and 425, that I'm extremely happy with. These are little guys, nothing like a CUT but they're JD. I haven't had a problem with them since I bought them new (1984 and 1995, respectively). So, I'm going with the JD brand name and its' long standing reputation for quality manufacturing when I purchase my 4710. And I'll graciously take what I get, and learn to live with it for good or for worst.

I have a 4710, with a power reverser, but it still has one of those buttons and its for four wheel drive, I see no problems at all with it. It may freeze or something but I dont think it could be damaged. Cliff

Eagon,

Beautiful! Beautiful! AND, my wife was standing over my shoulder when I loaded the picture and, you guessed it, she said "Wow! Beautiful!" When do we go? What's swimming around in that lake?

Bill:
It's lake Magog at the foot of Mount Assinaboine in British Columbia and can be accessed from the Alberta or the BC. sides.
There are some cabins operated by The BC govt. that are rustic and used to be on a first come basis. Also a camp ground and there is a small privately operated Lodge. Access is by foot, skis, horse or helicopter.
I do not know what resides in the lake.

I don't really care about the fish; it's so beautiful. After backpacking to the most remote areas I could find in Colorado and Wyoming, ostensibly for the best fishing, I came to realize that I really just loved the land; would find myself sitting on the edge of a stream or lake watching, listening, using all the senses to simply experience Nature. Not to be corny, but a very spiritual experience. BTW, our land in Iowa allows for the same feelings -- wonderful oaks and wild flowers allowed to grow on this prairie Savannah -- not touched by the plow.

It's still a beautiful planet and I've been really impressed by pictures posted of the acerages of TBN members all over the country and the world. Love of the land seems to be a bond among us and I wonder if that, more than tractors and implements, is what these postings are ultimately about.
