So yes I choose to do what the manufacture says to do and get the metal and crud out of it??

Therein lies the problem. Some owners manuals say to change but the Service manual and my dealer say wait till 400 hours.
That's why I say if it feels good do it.

I hear ya Murph, I read it both ways as well.
That crap in the buckets is just what had settled out of the oil and didn't get poured pour out when I dumped them, there were alot of big floaty pieces as well that dumped with the oil, Paint? I dunno.

It was impressive enough to me that I may even change the oil again when its time for the 200hr filter change to make sure it is all flushed out, then put some time on that oil.

I'll be hanging on to this tractor so I don't mind the maintenance.

Cab in your future?;)

That was what I thought it was too, but I was not sure.

Those are termed "recreational fluid changes" It's a "manly past time", that is 99% feel good
Wow  Every excuse in the world not to change your oil, your as bad as my neighbor.

Oil does not wear out. It gets dirty (hence the 50,hour change to remove crud and break in contaminants) and looses its additive package. So if you can filter it and add the additives back in it could last as long as the unit. I had a customer that filtered and monitored his oil in large cranes. Some of the units ran for 15+ years on the same hydraulic oil. Filtered to 2 micron and additives replenished as needed. For most it is more cost effective to change the oil. CJ

My Ventrac is 2000 hours before change!

The log splitter in the shed has a "pressure drop" guage (so does the Hurlimann) that is placed in circuit to provide information to COMBAT the wasteful fluid changes that come from the "feel good psyche".

I do endorse clean fluids. but based on causality, not on emotion.
Take care of your equipment, but be aware of the facts. (send a sample out for analysis for example) Place a magnet somewhere in the sump!

Would you not expect the fluid filter to do it's job? That is my first line of prevention!

As a note, automotive automatic transmissions sometimes carry "lifetime" fluids. Though the transmission makers, like ZF, will tell you 30,000 miles is quite enough between changes. Let's do the math. 30,000 miles at average of 30 mph..(typical automotive use) that is 1000 hours! And an auto box is not so much different than a hydrostatic drive.

Just a perspective, I'm not trying to change anyones ways of doing things.

A auto trans is nothing like a hydrostat. Auto trans is made to Tolerances to .001 at best with pressures to 450psi in HD transmissions. Hydrostats run with .0002 tolerances and are junk at .0015 in the rotating group. Pressures are normally 4000psi all the way to almost 7000psi. A little bit of dirt at these clearances and pressures will cause a lot of damage and wear. Not trying to be a jerk about this but modern hydraulics are a long way from the way they used to be. Things have advanced along with how they have to be cared for. CJ

IMO it's a waste of 5 gallons or more, of perfectly good oil, to do a 50hr.

Metal shavings and debris accumulated at the bottom after 50 hrs, have been stopped by the same suction screen, and the same filter, that will stop them after the 50 hr.

Dirt is the real enemy, and you can't accumulate much dirt in there, in 50 hrs.

At this point, I would only do a 50hr. change to switch to synthetic oil, which is also probably a waste. But that, on the other hand, does make me "feel good". :D

CJone, So the factory filtration systems are useless?

I was amazed at how "black" the fluid was at the 50 hour.. so is that dirt? something from the casting process? I don't know. And this is in addition to the paint chips, or what ever they were. I am telling you guys, what went back in sure looked a lot better than what came out.
