50 hour service

Got all my fluids (ex. engine oil, which is already Mobil 1) today, plus filters. Only got the outer air filter. They had the hydro filter in stock.

It's at 37 hours. Not long until the 50.

To all who change their own trans/hydro fluid,

I would be interested to know if you find magnet strips in your filter screen. There was some discussion of this, a while ago. Some folks said their dealer said they don't do much....just through them out. A few said they put them back in, after cleaning them and the screen. As I found a lot of filings on them at the 50 hr. service, and again some at 173 hr. and 275 hr., I figure can't hurt to leave in. [btw...the extra changes were due to using on old wood splitter who's fluid I didn't trust in my nice CUT]

Definately re-install the magnets after cleaning. I'd have to give second thought to a dealer that recomended throwing them out. Was it a salesman that said it? if so I'd understand , because they rarely know anything. If it was a service tech, then it was either an untrained one, or an irresponsible one, or one looking for job security.

Bill,

It was in a pevious thead and I "think" it was regarding some CUT's (not sure of models) came through with the magnets and some w/o them. As my failing memory recalls, it was something like ["...they used them in some models for a while but they're (JD) not iinstalled in some of the the newer unit

As I see it, they do collect filings so, why would they discontinue thier use, other than penny pinching.

I had been little awed with the prospect of changing the transmission fluid. I had never done this on a car, plus 13.5 litres is a lot of oil that could possible spill. There was a magnet strip in the strainer. The most difficult task was putting the retainer for this back into the transmission. I finally found the best way was to raise it slowly with a hydraulic jack and then when it was level with the hole gently tap it in with a wood block. All done /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Generally I do all the maintainance on my tractors that I can. When my 2210 got to the 50 hr interval, I decided that the dealer should do it (and at the same time load the tires); well surprise; wake up; the servicing came to almost $500. When I went through the bill with my dealer, I saw how everything added up. This is why my advice to new purchaser's is to negotiate the 50 hr servicing in the purchase deal. You'll be sure the tractor, for warranty reasons, is correctly checked out, and for peace of mind, you'll know your investment is being properly maintained. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

That's awful JDFanatic. My spare parts came to $108.00. Two oil filters, one air filter. 3 quarts of engine oil and 5 gallons of transmission oil. I reckon that I spent about 4 hours doing the work and 75% of that was because of my ignorance and need to improvise.

osy,

The wife called it something else! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Anyway, live and learn; at least I know the first servicing was done by the book and everything checked. This dealer's hourly rate isn't cheap, but I do trust him.

Changing the transmission oil has made a difference to the infamous John Deere HST whine. It hasn't gone completely, but has a deeper note and seems a lot less threatening. So, if you were wavering about that part of the servicing I strongly recommend that you do it.

magnets in a lubricating system are usually there to tell you you have a problem, not to filter out impurities, the filter does that. if it came with them i would use them, and if it ever has more chips than normal on it something may be failing.
