("So here's a question, what if you go out and buy a two year old used $200k Deere. You're out plowing your field when the engine goes boom. Knowing this is not a simple problem you call Deere and the guy comes out. When he connects up his laptop to the computer and says "Sorry but you have hacked software, we wont fix this under warranty. Before we will fix it we also need to go through the entire machine to make sure everything is correct (at your cost)."? What would you do?")

A> I'd first call Red Green, B> Use it for a boat anchor and get a different color tractor. On second thought, The John Deere dealer shouldn't of sold me this used PO Crap without first making sure is was software ready.

For me its simple.

I don't buy Deere.
If I did I wouldn't buy anything still under warranty used
Its unusual for me to modify anything still under warranty
I would call someone from my own shop to come out and fix it if I didn't have the time to work on it myself

If you think this is a Deere only thing I'm sure you are mistaken. A lot of modern full feature ag tractors have a lot of computer features. Things like using GPS to map out your field and hold a steady speed and keep track of your position. It should be possible (if not already) to have a tractor that can plow a field without anyone in it. So buying a different brand isn't likely to be an option.
