How does Deere get 331 lbs of torque from the new 5085M (4.5 L) when the 5425 (4.5L) is within 4 eng hp and 5 pto hp and the 5425 as only 208 lbs? The 5425 was rated at 1500 rpms while the 5085M is rated at 1600 rpms. Even the 5075M (3.05L) has 300 lbs of torque.

Are the numbers off?

i can't give you a straightforward answer because I haven't seen a whole lot of info on these new tractors yet. what i have read is that the new 5 series are 700 pounds heavier then the 5025 series. that's on Deere's website, so you maybe able to find out there. i was under the assumption that these new tractors were just changing the numbers, but there seem to be a few more improvments to them.

Looked at the website specifications and those are amazing torque numbers for that size of tractor, very interesting.

Don't know either, but I hope this is not the start of a hp/cu inch competition between the various manufacturers. With a tractor I prefer to get plenty of displacement and long engine life. Not much point in shrinking the engine only to turn around and buy more front weights.

Will try to remember to ask the dealer about this when I stop by today.

Most likely as I haven't looked at the site is they are using turbo chargers. That and it could also have to do with the gearing.

I would like to know the torque numbers on my 5203. the last test they did on them was in 2006 before they put turbos on all 5003 models and before they added MFWD and syncshuttle/syncreverser transmissions. the older version of the 5203 made 136ft lbs which isnt bad for a 179ci non turbo motor. still, i wish they would have redone the tests after the additions to the 5003. maybe i can look up a 5055E and get an idea.

According to the 5103/5203/5303/5403 operator's manual on JD's website, the turbo version of the 5203 puts out 209 N.m, which is about 154 ft lbs.

RWolf- the 5425 is turbo charged too. My dealer could not explain it, I expect some change but an increase of 120 lbs is Huge.

I looked at the Nebreska Tractor Test Lab site and did not see any information concerning the 5085M. With a torque figure that high, I would consider that there might be a misprint. :eek:

A 6430 only makes 327 lb.-ft. of torque. A 6230 makes 252 lb.-ft. of torque (tested in Feb. 2009). That makes me think 331 is a misprint or they are doing something different with how they measure torque.

I noticed that too. I think the E series(5083e) replaces the 25 series(5425) but I dont know what is different on the m series.

More weight and torque it looks like, and bigger price tag. My guess is the E is regular duty and the M is heavy duty. Looking at the photos side by side there is a difference in frames. Between the step and lower hood you can see thru the E but not the M.

The D and E replace the 5x03 series, the 5083E Limited thru 5101E Limited are new additions, the M series is the 5x25 replacement.

I don't know what his point was, however, I stopped to looking at a 5 series tractor, which modestly impressed me at first glance, until I to read the "Made in China" Tag on the front axle...

I have been told that I am a hard person to satisfy. To much attention paid to where parts are sourced, fit, finish, etc... That has come from dealing with "REAL" John Deeres. Tractors built at the Waterloo, Iowa Plant(or dozers from Dubuque) for a lifetime of work farming. Granted I've never dealt with anything that small...92-180 HP in the 100s of hours behind the wheel. I've driven newer and far more powerful, however, I'll not comment on something I have spent a week operating. That said the 8030 series seems to be a wonderful machine...

I have NEVER seen a "Made in China" tag added to ANY design and have it IMPROVE the item. "Made in China" to a working farmer, or anyone who values the pursuit of excellence, signals a junk part that likely will prove a weak point. I've seen it myself...

This is going to tick some folks off, however, I hope they can understand and appreciate a different perspective. As someone who has paid the taxes behind the wheel of a true John Deere Farm Tractor I don't like to see $1500 riding lawn mowers, weed eaters, rebadged cheap air compressors, tool sets, etc painted green and yellow and called JOHN DEERE. It cheapens the reputation earned in the dust with The New Iron Horse...
