So I had my 5085M hooked up to my big trailer hauling it up a steep hill on my property. I stopped to take a pic, this one:

When I got back in the cab, I put in in A1 (lowest gear), and it made an awful racket. I stopped, tried reverse and same deal. The range lever would no longer go into park although the parking lock was clearly engaged. I backed down the hill into level ground, hoping it would pop back out of park. It didn't. Decided to drive it the 1/4 mile up to level ground where I could disconnect the trailer. It made this awful noise the whole way there:

I can see various linkages under the cab, but its pretty much impossible to get in there to see what's really going on without removing a bunch of stuff.

Any idea how to proceed at this point?

Thanks

I can see a split tractor in your future.

I think you will need to first understand just what is "stuck" that won't let you release "park". Maybe JD parts will offer up that info in the parts schematics.
Or maybe someone will see this that knows from your description what is the actual problem.

So I found that range selector/park interacts with this single shaft that goes into the transmission:

There are no external adjustments.

I did find the service manual and the first step is to remove the cab and then remove the transmission...

Here are the components:

Here's the adjustment procedure once the transmission is on a bench:

On the page below, you can see the shaft coming out the side of the transmission that the range selector connects to:

I guess I'll never park the tractor on a steep hill again...

I have one tractor with park and it says not to park on on a slope. I assume for this reason. Sort of a pain, most tractors you set the brake and you are good.

Hope you get it fixed, sounds like a lot of work.

Had me worried for you until I realized you didn't finish this sentence, and say remove the tranny cover, which is better than removing the transmission.

Hope you see an obvious problem when you remove that cover.

Yeah, tranny can stay, but removing the cab is going to be a royal pain. It was off once before at the dealer when they replaced the cab frame due to this mishap:

I was loading the trailer and it started rolling into the tractor.

Here's the cover I need to get to:

Might call the dealer in the morning and see if they have run into this issue before and if there's an alternative to removing the cab.

Called the dealer to get an idea of cost. He said about 10-12 hours to remove the cab and pop off the transmission cover. Their shop rate is $130/hour. So about $1,500 before they can start determining what's wrong with it. Ouch...

That is painful, but shop labor is not cheap these days.

If whatever is wrong, if not fixed, might create further damage???
