Bushhogging this weekend and poked a hole in the black metal screen on my 5103's removable side panel. Pulled the panel off and noticed the screen is mounted to the panel w/ philips head screws. Thought I could buy the screen but was told by the local jd guy I had to buy the whole panel @ $192! Anyone know if he was correct? Seems you could buy the screen separate.

Don't know the answer but not unusual.. My Dodge van threw the nut off the electric fan and messed up the fan hub. It all unbolts down to a pretty simple hub but you can't buy it separately. Have to buy the whole fan... motor, shroud and all for over 300 bucks. Luckily the nut (left hand thread metric) was still laying on the cross member under the fan. A little JB weld and it has held for over a year.

Might check into something to replace the screen with that can be had locally.

Thanks for the help guys. Looks like I have to order the whole panel /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif Oh well, it took only 3 months to damage the new tractor! No one seems to sell the screen separate.

OK, now prepare to be mad as I am about this: here's what I learned. JD USED to sell the screens for about 34 bucks. Sold a lot of them as they are easily damaged. sold so many they decided to make more money by selling the WHOLE PANEL assembly! Now, you can't even buy the front screen without buying the entire front bumper assembly, with lights. I'm mad as **** about it.

There are separate part numbers listed for the screens, but the left hand one has a note that says you have to order the 'assembly' (JDParts lists the prices as $160). The right hand screen has no such note, but won't add it into the cart by itself.

You might try to have your dealer do a parts search to see if any dealers in the country have any separate NOS screens in their inventory.

Part numbers are R138967 (right side) and R138958 (left side).

I just checked on the equivalent parts for my 4710 - and the grill metal is available separately, at $64 /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

John Deere will really rip you on certain parts price wise, one thing about them they can about 95% of the time have them overnight(if you can afford them).

All tractor companies make money by selling parts. The parts business is usually the biggest money maker for the dealers also.

Just be glad you can get them still, John Deere is running out of NOS gas caps for the old John Deere M. Now they want over $100 for this simple little cap if you buy from them. Why? Because they only have a few left.
