I got as far as I could last weekend: dismantled/inspected/reassembled the primer pump (no dirt, no broken parts) and recharged the battery. Pumped-and-cranked many times at full throttle, and tried it this again morning - the engine still won't start.
A mechanic from the local JD dealer will visit the tractor today or tomorrow.

We had luck pulling them to get them started after running out of fuel. One time the loader was down, so we put the chain under the bucket to the front of the frame and when we pulled it tight, it raised the loader off the ground enough to get it going. Pulling them spins the engine much faster than the starter can, and can push the air out. Also, Ether, though I hate using it, will get it running long enough to start pushing fuel through it.

I guess it wouldn't be sucking air somewhere along the fuel path? And, the pump is spinning.
I hope the JD guy figures it out for you.

Hi,

OK, forget about the gas soaked rag next to the intake, nothing good can come of that. If it starts you may get a runaway from the vapors and exceed the rated RPM and damage the engine.

I know it's going to sound nuts but if you can, get it to a steep hill and face it going downhill and leave it like that for a couple hours or so. If you can get the inlet of the injector pump lower than the outlet of the fuel tank, it may have enough head of pressure to get the pump to pickup the fuel. Not knowing the tank/injector pump locations, this may be unrealistic but it has saved me a lot of grief more than a few times with trucks and off road equipment.

Problem solved! The JD mechanic replaced the primer-pump diaphragm yesterday. Then he pinched off the return fuel line, pushed the priming pump to increase fuel-line pressure, and started it up. It runs just fine. I went right out and bush-hogged for two hours.

Thanks to jd110 for suggesting that I pinch off the return line. I am now a believer. The JD maintenance manual's procedure for bleeding/priming the fuel system does not mention that (Maintenance Guide 5225, 5325, 5425, 5525, 5625 Tractors; page 65-12).
