53 Ford Jubilee

I have a chance to buy one. Anything I should look out for? Easy to work on? I'm looking to be able to use it for small hobby farm work. Mostly keeping a 800 ft. lane open in the winter. Maybe skidding a few trees and mowing about 1 1/5 acres. Suppose to have a mower setup. Hoping to look it over this weekend. Thanks in advance for any help.

check the hyds.. probably weakest link on a naa was the oem square vane engine mounted pump. if it has the newer cylindrical piston pump.. it's better off.

check axle seals.. brakes.. hyds see if they hold a load.. check pto and clutch.. does it ahve good oil pressure.. charge? steering ok.. water in oil.. oil in water.. etc... the usual stuff.

pretty good basic tractor.. 134ci ohv gasser 4 cyl engine.. about 33 hp.. live hyds.. 4spd trans.. non live pto.

All of what soundguy said, and if you plan to use a rear mounted snow blower on it, check how fast reverse is. On my 8N it's too fast to do a good job of blowing snow. If you increase the rpm's to run the blower, the snow collects in the augers faster than the blower can move it out.

Thanks for the info. Now the silly questions, What is good oil pressure for this tractor? Checking the "hold the load" can I just raise the hitch, shut the engine off and see if it stays up? Keep in mind I have never owned a real tractor and many of the terms have me confused. What does non-live pto mean? I do know the power take off should be able to spin but how do I know if it's OK? Thanks again for all the help.

oil pressure for a 134 ohv engine generally runs inthe 35-60 psi range.

a really worn one may be inthe 20's.

in reality.. 20 psi is -enough- at hot idle.. in fact.. many older tractors piddle right along with much less. My 2n has 18 cold and 12 hot... been working fine.


yes.. lift a load and shut the machine down.. prime areas for leaks are the lift piston oring and backup washer.

non live pto means the pto won't spin when the clutch is pressed ( basic answer ).

In a single stage clutch model like the NAA.. if the main drive clutch doesn't slip.. then the pto shouldn;'t slip either as the drivetrain and pto are coupled ( trans pto )..

Definitely check out the hydraulics. That was Fords first attempt at a "live" system, and as SG says, it took them a couple years to work the bugs out of it. Live hydraulics is certainly a huge advantage for bush-hogging, and the Jubilee was better than the N's for that task (as long as the hydraulics still work). I will take an N over a Jubilee for almost anything else however (better power/weight ratio, fuel economy, much more reliable hydraulics and better parts availalibility). The lack of live pto is no big deal as long as you run an overrunning coupler. 8n's are not good on rear snowblowers due to high speed reverse (same ratio as 3rd forward) but that gear is perfect for pushing snow with a rear blade. A 9n, or 2n has reverse gear equal in ratio to 1st forward which works much better with a blower or rear scoop but is way too slow for a rear snowplow.

So here's the update. After seeing an ad on a Hot Rod site I check out I receive the sellers info. The asking price is $1000 for a running Jubilee w/ a mower that "rides,runs, and mows". I like fixing thing so this was of interest to me. The gentleman that passes on the info to me reminds me not to ask for a picture (odd). I get ahold of the owner and he procedes to tell me that it was scrapped. This oddball took it to a scrapyard and received $267. I don't know what is worse, this antique tractor being scrapped or some goofball trying to get $1000 for a junk tractor. Either way it wasn't meant to be and Left me wondering about (some) people....

It does make you wonder.

I was gonna buy a tractor byt he roadside.. talked to the owner.. explained I was on the way to work and would come back in the am with trailer and money.. offered to leave a down paymnet.. was assured it would be fine.. I get to work and after a half hour get a call that the tractor is sold!!!

My guess is it wasn't actually scrapped as in crushed and dumped in the shredder.

I hit the scrapyard once or twice a week and the guys know my want list and all ag equipment is on it.

They just set it aside and wait for me or others like me.

You be surprised what does get scrapped though.

I have one of these tractors, and for being 56 years old it runs better then I do. MY question is what is the H.P. rating at the PTO? I know that when new the enging is rates at 32 HP, but from what I have read, the HP at the PTO is somewhat less. I am thinking about getting a PTO driven chipper, and want to make sure that the tractor can actually handle such a load.

I think you should be safe callint it 30hp at the pto if compression are within minimum specs, and carb and gov, and ignition is up to snuff.

My guess is the dirt-bag sold it out from under you, and didn't have the 'stones' to tell you so! By telling you it was scraped, maybe he felt you'd feel sorry he got so little for it!! Would have been fun to say "Oh, what scrap yard, I might like to chase it down for parts!"

I bought a jubilee and Massey five foot shredder for 600 dollars and it is a power horse and runs great!

600$ for both? mower MIGHT be worth that alone..
