Bobidy

Sounds like you bought your tiller from Ray! If Ray recomended the tiller and said it would work for you, then all is good!

runningbird: Glad to hear that. yes; Ray Gentry. Card says ram tractor (405)414-7883 seemed like a good guy.

Tvern: mine looks like yours. Same color, lever handle for depth adjust instead of wheel has several decals just none that identify model. Looking forward to using it. as wet as it has been here I am going to have to wait awhile. P.S. Mine dose not have that linkage to the left of the depth bracket nor any place for it.

That looks like my tiller. If we're talking about the same "linkage" that is for the auto depth control and works in conjunction with the UFO controls on newer models. Think this is how the model number are assigned. Fist 3 digits are the tiller width in mm x 10. Last digit says "extra" features it has. Think most of those features are intended to work with tractor UFO controls.

I have the UFO controls working on my tractor and it controls tiller depth and tilt. To my knowledge I'm the only one that has ever hooked up these controls. Tractor Ernie provided me with the missing parts and he has never heard of anyone using the automated controls. Another person I know and is quite familiar also had never heard of anyone connecting up these controls.

Should be some pictures here on the forum from several yrs ago showing my setup.

(Mickey FX.." controls depth and tilt ") While we are on that subject I would like to clear that up in my mind. Seems obvious, but I would like to make sure. for non ufo use, The depth bracket/wheels control the depth of the tines & the tilt would be controlled by setting the wheel on one side higher or lower than the other ? & what part does the top link play in all this? what purpose would tilt be used for? Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks Bob.

I've never had reason to use tilt adjustment on my tiller, hopefully ground would be pretty level. The top link however can be used to adjust the tiller away from your back wheels. Also it has a leveling affect on the tiller. I don't know it for fact but believe the gearbox on the tiller by design should be in a vertical position or close to it. If it wasn't I don't think it would hurt anything. I fabricated some depth wheels for mine but really not that necessary. Depth can pretty much be maintained with lift. I have an adjustable stop on my lift up and down so I can go back to same place each time. Might ought to clarify not using tilt. I do level tiller with it. After reading this it is about as clear as mud. By tilt adjustment I am talking about using adjustable side link, only to level tiller sideways. Top link adjustment only for leveling tiller vertically or moving away from back wheels. I wrote this and really don't understand it myself.

I wasn't real clear either with my question. I have never used a tiller on a tractor or seen one used. I asked the seller some questions on setting it up but some things I forgot to ask or did not think of at the time. And some things I am not clear on.

I am currently using search to clarify terms like draft, tilt, angle as pertains to tractor implements. I'm new to this guys. I have only owned a tractor since sept 09.

From what I could learn thru search and what you have said, In my mind I have it like this:

To run the tiller with no gauge wheels, you use the 3pt to adjust depth by up or down. The top link length is used to limit this up/down & level the tiller and to possibly tune the bite of the tines from forward to back from level. lift arms on 3pt would be level or same hight on both sides. To adjust the tilt you would adjust one of the lift arms shorter than the other depending on direction of tilt wanted.

To run with gauge wheels, same as above except the guage wheel height determines the depth and tilt would be applied by having one wheel higher than the other from level. Am I even close? Even googeling, There dosent seem to be a lot out there on this.

Setting up the brush hog was pretty simple. back wheel set heighth of cut and top link the angle of cut. though I had the top link hooked to the tiller h bracket on the 3pt.(since corrected.)

I have a 58" RSA1300 that came with my YM1602D. Works good. But wouldn't go any bigger.

Not to send this topic to far off track here, but there is another thing to consider when buying a used Yanmar tiller. A not so hidden cost of running a tiller is replaceing the tines, and how available they are. I have read several threads here about how hard replacement tines are to find for the used gray market Yanmar tillers. Did I somehow get the wrong impression from all of this ?? When I bought my YM3000 I was offered a great looking Yanmar tiller for dirt cheap, but I passed. A year later I found a almost free Howard 5' and snapped it up. ( $100 at a farm sale ) Over the years that thing has had the tines replaced twice and keeps on tilling. Tines are available aftermarket, or from the factory at a reasonable price. ( about $300 per set ) I can't help but wonder what would have happened if I had bought the Yanmar tiller and needed a new set of tines ?? Would the tiller have ended up being junk early on just because I couldn't get a new set of tines ?? Might make the price of a new tiller that is supported in this country end up looking cheap in compairason. What do you folks do for new tines with the Yanmar tillers ?? Reason I'm asking is a neighbor is considering one. Thanks,
Chris

Chris, Hoye has complete sets of new replacement tines for @$220 and $20 for the connecting bolts. I have had my tiller for over 10 years and still have only replaced about 10-12 tines.

Hoye's ad notes there are no original tines still available so these are replacements.
