54 inch john deere snow plow wear edge

This sounds like a slick deal. Never thought of using a thick rubber mat as a wear bar. I have a roll of about 3/8" thick heavy rubber mat I have been storing for years. Has anyone used this on a plow for a 4 wheeler? I have a 60" on my wheeler now and a steel wear bar and wear pads that I have to replace every couple years. If you use the rubber mat as a wear bar do you take off the wear pads? I have to replace them about as often as the wear bar. I am plowing asphalt and concrete 1500'+ 12 feet wide and goes up to a 3 stall garage. Appreciate the info

You can use 3/8 but no more than 1/2" lower than backer support or it will fold under. 3/4 or 1" works better and no shoes are necessary.

I looked at what I have and it is just over 1/2". What would happen if I put 2 pieces together and that would make it 1"? Maybe put a bevel on the back piece? Just a thought, I have lots of this and should be worth a try

So try 1/2". If it folds under, go to 1". Depends on how much is showing below the wear edge. Too much and even 1" will fold under. I cut mine at 4" and have 1" of mat between asphalt and moldboard. 1/2" below the wear edge and 1-1/2" above the wear edge.

If you double up the rubber, I would suggest gluing them together with rubber contact cement. I would predict it will act closer to a 1" thick piece.
