54 inch john deere snow plow wear edge

I don't know what you are plowing on. I have backtop and I use a rubber edge on my 54". The skid shoes dont touch the drive either. I have done 4 winters with no significant wear on the rubbber.

I'm using mine on a combination of surfaces starting with a concrete driveway and then to gravel and finishing on a 200 foot chipped rock asphalt road.

Maybe he's not using float mode. Putting down pressure on the plow will cause the cutting edge to wear a lot faster.

I use float and how thick is the rubber? Maybe I should give a little more background. I have a 455 with a deere 54 quick tatch blade and hydraulic angle. I use 5 deere 425 pound weights and a set of wheel weights. I use float and I so not pity skid shoes on the ground. Last year I plowed 20 concrete drives in town, average 2 car drives, and depending on the snow I usually run it 4-8 hrs every snow and my number of drives changes almost every snow. So I need something that lasts a long while and would tear up driveways.

And in earlier post
I went through 2 last year and I didn't even plow that much and also I wore out a set of skid shoes.

Seems a couple $50 plow edge's a year is not a big expense for the plowing you do on 20 drives. :D Not sure the 455 would support "5 deere 425 pound weights" either, but suspect it is a typo. :)
In short, I think you are getting your money's worth from the snow plow wear edge. ;)

The rubber I have is about 1/2". I bought the JD rubber edge. A lot of guys have used belt material at less cost.

I went to Tractor Supply and bought their 4ft. x 6ft x 1in Rubber Horse Stall Mat P/N 2219003 for $39.99. Cut a 4" x 54" piece, used the wear edge as a template to drill the holes, bought 10-5/16" 1-3/4" bolts, and bolted between the mold board and cutting edge. Been 3 winters of plowing 4500 sqft of blacktop. No wear yet. If it does get worn down, all I have to do is flip it over since I drilled the holes in the centerline of the strip. The hardest part was cutting the mat but a sharp utility knife and a straight edge gets it done in about 15 minutes. No marks on the blacktop. No more worn JD skid shoes at $47 a pair. Minimal gravel to rake in the spring. No torn up lawn. And the rest of the mat I used in front of my workbench. The only drawback is it won't completely clean the driveway when the snow is packed by being driven over. I'll live with that..

Thats just the cost of doing business. If your plowing that many driveways.

I bought the same mat, and attached the same way. The only difference is that I cut the rubber piece about 6" wide so that I could flip it when the first edge wears out. Works fine on my asphalt driveway for snow.

Yup. I cut mine at 4" and have 1" of mat between asphalt and moldboard. 1/2" below the wear edge and 1-1/2" above the wear edge. Still can flip it and use it again. The more mat you have below the wear edge, the more flexible the mat becomes. To each his own!!!
