And in earlier post

Seems a couple $50 plow edge's a year is not a big expense for the plowing you do on 20 drives. :D Not sure the 455 would support "5 deere 425 pound weights" either, but suspect it is a typo. :)
In short, I think you are getting your money's worth from the snow plow wear edge. ;)

I guess you have the time and don't care about your money. My factory edge lasted about 4 years, so my thoughts are the replacement one should last a out the same. Yea I plow a little more then some people but I like using my garden tractors. When I replaced the factory one I had to order another new one 2 days later because the replacement one was already wore out. I use float I try to keep the skid shoes close to the same setting as the cutting edge. Also the admires shoes are 50 bucks a set, so I don't want to replace the edge every week or the skies evey year. I see other people are having the same problems so I must be doing it all the same way as everyone else. I will try the horse mat, that would give a lot of wear edges out of one mat, thank you all for the suggestions and ideas, it helped out a lot.

I have the same blade on a JD425. My original edge lasted 14 years. Both the edge and shoes failed at the same time. I do about 5 asphalt drives, about 5 times a year, on average.

I put new ones on a couple of years ago. The new ones seem to be wearing much faster. I think the horse mat is a great idea.

20 drives is a lot on a blade really made for a single resident use.

Don't know if you are aware of it but JD sells 2 different grades of steel skid shoes. Regular and heavy duty....priced accordingly....;)

I am aware. The better ones are too steep for my blood. I think they were like $70 EACH!

I'll probably modify a pair of the toadstool type made for snow blowers when these wear out.

My local dealer had a used 54 inch plow for sale, I decided to take a look at it and noted the skids and asked how much wear was left on them, he said about 30% and the blade edge was also fairly worn after 3 seasons of use. I decided to buy a new one and I've had it for about one week. We've not had much, if any snow here and so, I have not used. Whether crazy or not, I decide to buy a UHMV Poly edge blade, the UHMV is supposed to be six times harder than steal. I will see. If you look it up on the Internet, it seems to be a valid claim. I also decided to purchase the John Deere Heavy Duty Skids. I felt they were less likely to dig into the gravel. I suspect now that I have purchased the snow plow, chains, weights, it will not snow substantially here this year!:ashamed:

I think you mean UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight). Interesting stuff. We use it as an insulated mounting plate on one of our products. You can cut it on a table saw with a combination blade. It does not sand easily. I suspect it will wear fairly well.

Some years ago I replaced the carpeting on my boat trailer bunks with UHMW. I could drive the boat up on there with very little throttle. It is really slippery.

The material you really want is urethane for the plow wear edge. Wears 5 times better than rubber according to manufacturer.

I got my material from these guys.

Truck Surface-Saver Snow Plow Blades and Urethane Edges in Stock For Immediate Delivery

I got 1 inch thick piece that is 54 wide for the plow and 6 high. I cut it right down the middle to make it into two 3 inch edges. Drilled my own holes. I now have a replacement plus I can flip it when one edge wears. My cost was 100bucks but that is for enough material for the 2 I mentioned. I also backcut the edge about 30 degrees on the wear edge so it would sit flat when the plow is flat to the ground.

I'll get some pictures today and post them up.

Interesting. The UHMW has a 60/65 durometer and the urethane referenced has a 90/95 durometer. I would think harder is better. Might have to try that urethane stuff.

I will see how the UHMW wears, I purchased it prior to looking into the one inch alternative which I think is probably a better choice.

This sounds like a slick deal. Never thought of using a thick rubber mat as a wear bar. I have a roll of about 3/8" thick heavy rubber mat I have been storing for years. Has anyone used this on a plow for a 4 wheeler? I have a 60" on my wheeler now and a steel wear bar and wear pads that I have to replace every couple years. If you use the rubber mat as a wear bar do you take off the wear pads? I have to replace them about as often as the wear bar. I am plowing asphalt and concrete 1500'+ 12 feet wide and goes up to a 3 stall garage. Appreciate the info
