TxBillyed, thansk for the input. i also think I would the rear mounted mower for brush hogging only - less worry about scuffs! Plus getting the 54" I could almost have enough for a rear mower! Hmmmmmm.

Re: 54

Cooker, good inputs, and I definitely hear you. With a little landscaping effort I know either mower will work fine. I am going to increase the size of a couple of my mulch beds this month and that should eliminate most of the big "mower deck" trouble areas.

Bill,

As far a cutting grass to he honest I was not happy with the results. ........ I will give the 413 another bite at it, but for around the house where I want short grass, I may consider going to a mid deck mower in the future.

Your profile info is a little sparse and I'm not sure how much experience you have, so please forgive me if I'm telling you something you already know.

You're probably never going to be happy with your 413 as a lawn mower. Although listed as "light duty", your 413 is designated as a "rotary cutter", not a "finish mower". If you were to look at the blades, you'd probably notice hardly anything that looked like a sharpened edge. A rotary cutter doesn't "cut" grass as much as it "rips" or "breaks" it. They are designed to do rough cutting in pastures and to cut small saplings, briers, vines, and brush in general. I've never seen one that I'd want to mow a lawn area with.

Re: 54

A three point rotary cutter, brush hog etc is not the same as a three poitn finish mower. A finsih mower may be useable for pasture grass but is nothing more than a MMM deck with its own wheels and a 3-point hitch--they are not brush hogs and are rather more expensive than a rotary cutter though less so than the MMM from the manufacturer.

nuru, ask your jd dealer to set up a rack of shoes in the showroom - could be the answer to your problems!
[making that gross assumption that your better half likes to buy shoes of course]...

(and yes, i have always been single)

Don't think that Nuru's better half would like to stomp around with some work boots in her finest attire... /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Best to keep the ladies out of the JD dealership.... sometimes it's best for them NOT to know what all of those pretty tractor things cost! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Hmmmm... yeah, I used to be that way many, many moons ago. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

And it has taken many, many moons to figure out how to "work" the system. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Oh, yes... I forgot to mention. It goes both ways..... /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: 54\" Vs 60\" MMM Deck, Which one again?

Thanks for the input, your right on, I have cleared some nasty brush in my lower pasture but to cut close Im out of luck. I got the 413 with the unit and have a use for it for now, down the road Im not sure. I am looking at the mid deck 60 in. mower, ( Just don't let the boss know) but Im in no big rush. I have a Sears SS/16 that I have been rebuilding and it cuts close for now around the house. Need the grass down low here in Texas because of the grasshopper problem we have had the past three years. However this year with all the cleaning I have been doing with the new 4100 I hope that will change.
