If I put an adapter (1000 to 540) on my 1000 rpm PTO and run it at a lower rpm, would this work as an E-PTO? Or is this a dumb idea? Any thoughts?

I should note that my tractor shows the PTO rpm on the dash when the PTO is engaged. I have not checked at what engine rpm the the 1000 PTO would be running 540 rpm yet.

If you want to simulate an E-PTO at 540 RPM, you will need a different gear ratio conversion than 1000 to 540. With just that the engine will still require the same RPM for 540 as it did for 1000. It will instead require a ratio based on the engine RPM difference at E-PTO speed along with the 1000 to 540 ratio. Maybe this is what you meant and I just didn't interpret your question correctly. Either way just thought I would bring it up.

Zebrafive,
I suspect that this would work for only light duty tasks. The epto works using about a 30% reduction in engine rpms what you are considering is about a 50% reduction from your rated pto speed. This should approximate idle speed on most tractors, and roughly 20% of rated pto power.

Be careful of lugging the engine at high PTO loading.
