5410 shift lever removal

Not sure how that would work. The two units look (on paper that is) pretty similar, and on opposite sides of the shift cover. Both look to have recessed areas beneath the links that rotate the shifting shafts. So far only the right side has the problem.

I think I need to take another look at the tractor with all this in mind. Maybe pull some of the tinware off around it and see what I can come up with. If there is in fact an area down there below the lever pivot point that does not directly drain into the transmission, then it must also not get much oil FROM the transmission either. It might be possible to drill a small hole near the bottom so whatever water is trapped in there can drain out once it thaws. Might be easier and faster than trying to loosen the bolts holding the bottom cover. We'll se.

I have done just that on a few occasions. On problem machines that freeze up over and over, I have drilled a small hole in the bottom of that cover to keep it dry. Better than thawing it out with heat gun every time it freezes. It seems that condensation collects in there even when boots are good. The hole also allows you to spray some lube in there occasionally. I like to use Fluid Film.

I'm not sure that drilling the cover would be possible without removing it. I'm thinking that most, if not all of the four bolts holding it on can't be reached without taking half the tractor apart. I'm leaning towards looking for an accessible spot where I can drill a hole in the box, down as low as possible. Not quite sure, but guessing it's made of cast aluminum? I have a number of extended length drill bits in various sizes and lengths, some up to a foot long. I may be able to drill through the sheet metal somewhere, go through that hole and reach the side of the box. We'll see.
