I priced a 5420, 4wd, straddle mount, 3 scvs, syncro w/ 541 self leveling loader with standard bucket and hay spear attachment for $34975. good, bad, ugly? This was the first quote no neg. at all. seems about two thousand high to me.

From the pictures in the literature it looks like the bale spear might also fit in the same frame as the pallet forks. Wonder if I could buy the pallet forks and then get just the spear to use on the same frame?

thanks

First of all,let me say that I know nothing about the 5420,other than it looks like a fine tractor.

I would go to Deeres web site (an excellent site) and go to the price configuration and see what MSRP would be on the unit and the extras.

At least you would know what the list would be...I've always found out in the past it does'nt cost a dime to make an offer. That is in less they take you up on it.

Chilimau,

That price sounds high to me, since I paid the same for a 5520 with the isolated open station, 4 scv's (two for the loader and two rear), a power reverser, and the 541MSL loader. I would think that yours should come in around $5000 less, since the price difference for the 5520 vs the 5420 should be about $2000, the power reverser adds about $2000, and the isolated open station should add around $1000. I did however not get the spear in the same price, but bought one later for $300. You might also want to check out the price at Midlawns 5420 page.

As to the bale spear vs the pallet forks, I do not know about the JD stuff, but I have a set of spear / forks which are essentially just a double spear with the width set to accomodate pallets. This seems to be a pretty good compromise for me. The forks attach to the loader using the JD quick attach system. If you would like, I could probably get a picture of them for you.

BTW, I think that the 5420 and 5520 are great tractors. If I were you, I would check out the Isolated Open Station instead of the straddle mount. You would not believe how much more roomy and comfortable they are.

Thanks for the response RF33!

I have just started looking and am thinking around the first of the year. I haven't got to try the iso platform yet. If I order one, I think I would get the 5520 iso platform, looks nice. What about getting all 5 scvs, maybe do TnT? Have you seen any cylinders that would work for TnT? I am thinking about the syncro with the economy PTO option for mowing and spraying.

I have looked at a used 5410 and a 5510. 5410 had 316 hrs. Park service had it and I would say the tires were about 50%. I can't image what they did to it to wear the tires like that. I guess lots of road travel would do it or spinning the tires trying to get a good load in the loader? Had 3 rear scvs, syncro, 4wd, and 541MSL for $29,950. Just kinda shook my head at. Those were a hard 300 hrs. My previous post was looking at what a new 5420 cost compared to this one.

Looked at a 2001 5510 last night, 4wd, 16.9 30's, 3 rear scvs, joystick, syncro, rear tires looked like new and fronts where probably 75% and a 541 non leveling loader with 646hrs for $26,000. Very clean like new, one owner, young farmer, needs a bigger machine for more land. He couldn't say enough good things about the machine. No problems, worked like a champ, good strong machine, Cadillac of the utility tractors, etc. I really like it, but really want the MSL loader and more SCVs. Fair price? Also had horizontal exhaust out the back by the 3pt. seemed like I was always smelling fumes. He really liked it being out of the way for loader work.

Looking at the Neb. tractor tests it looks like the 5520 has the best torque rise of the four machines in the 5020 series and is a hare underrated by deere in hp. My thinking on the economy PTO is noise and fuel. Any thoughts? I know it is strictly light/med duty chores, no baling with it. Baling is a ways off for me, but might in the future.

On the 18.4's vs the 16.9's for rear tires, what would you suggest? I like the look of the 18's but wondered about the fronts. To prevent the fronts from rubbing the loader they adjust the steering stops, losing some of your turning radius. Is this a good compromise between traction and turning? Guess you could readjust when you take the loader off if needed.

Anything you would do different on yours?

Again, thanks for the response and anything you feel like answering.

Thanks MReeter, I like their site! List price scares me! Puts it out of reach at that price.

Hi Mark,

Lets see, I will try my best to answer all of your questions. I think that as to the 5SCV's, the more the better. Mine has 4 right now, but I probably would have gotten 5 if I had ordered it (the dealer had mine on the lot since someone had ordered it, and could not wait till it came in and bought a 6110 instead). I have seen several hydraulic cylinders which would likely work for a hydraulic top link with a little welding, and will probably tackle this project in the near future. I think I will just do the hydraulic top, and leave the tilt though, since it seems like I am constantly needing to change the top link, but never the side.

The economy PTO really does sound like a great option for mowing and or spraying. I wish Deere had offered it with the power reverser. The increased fuel economy and decreased engine noise would be a welcome addition.

The 5410 sounds like it is priced pretty high, and sounds like it was used pretty darn hard. The 5510 sounds like pretty good deal though.

As to the economy PTO, as I understand it, you would not want to use it for running a baler etc., but it is simply a lever change to get the PTO back into the regular gear which sets 540 PTO RPM's back at 2400 engine RPM's.

I have the 18.4 X 30 tires in the back, and the 12.4 X 24's in the front, and am pretty happy with the turn radius. It is not probably the same as a JD 4100 mind you, but given the size of the tractor it feels pretty tight to me. If I had it to do again, I would stick to the 18.4's.

I also have the horizontal rear exhaust, and I am sort of mixed on this one. The only time I can smell the exhaust is if I leave the engine running while I am hooking up something to the TPH, and then I wish I had gotten the vertical stack, but I do like not having it sticking up in the way when I am driving. If I had that one to do over, I would probably get the horizontal exhaust again.

All in all, I think that the one thing I would do different would be to order a canopy for the thing sooner. I ordered one last week, and it should be in this week, and boy is that sun brutal without it. I have attached a rather low res picture of the tractor with a disc and chain harrow behind.

Thank you all for your comments on the 5000 series tractors. I enjoy the banter on the CUT's but am really headed to a full utility tractor.I know this site is designed for the smaller tractor but do appreciate folks chimeing in with thoughts on the full size utility tractor. So .... thanks and please keep it coming.

Thanks Ron,

My wife likes your photo, "That would make a good post card". Guess you could send it to all your tractor buddies. Thanks again for all of your insight. I will be back with more questions and prices I'm sure.
