55 gallon barrel fuel station questions

I picked up a nice used 99 gallon square tank with a 12 volt pump for diesel for $225 like farmers often use.

Be careful on the amount of fuel you are transporting. There are laws that regulate the number of gallons you can transport at a time. If you're a farmer it's more than for the rest of us. That Ag Exemption factors into that some how as well.

Truck bed tanks are normally max of 105 gallons, DOT starts looking for CDL/tanker endorsement and hazard placards at 110 gallons and up...

The 115v pump you are considering is HEAVY. Mostly steel and cast iron. It will deform the plastic barrel immediately and won't survive the trip to town on the 55 gal barrel. Switch to the 12 volt all aluminum pump and even it is heavy for the plastic on a road trip. If 12 volt is not doable, consider a hand crank.

If you are going to transport your fuel from a fueling station to your home/farm, it needs to be DOT approved. You sure don't want to spill 50 gallons of diesel somewhere due to a ruptured plastic barrel. You can pick up a 55 gallon transfer tank from Tractor Supply for less than $300. I see them frequently on craigs list for much less.

No it doesn't......necessarily. 3 drums at 50 gal of diesel each slip under the 1000# DOT minimum requirement for plackarding!!!!! The code is readily available on the www. I had Tanker and Haz. Mat. endorsements on my Class A CDL so I have been through the requirements that don't apply in this case.

The DOT looks at container size, if I recall. (Class A CDL, tanker endorsement, but been years since ive needed it or looked at the rules) Multiple smaller containers of less than 110gal, totalling less than a certin ammount, likely 1000gal as Texasmark said, should be ok. Diesel less an issue than gasoline, due to the lesser explosive nature. Im not brave enough to use a 55 gallon drum for gas...

I switched from all aluminum pump to a cast iron because the aluminum leaked around the threads. I could not keep the pipe fittings tight. I'd tighten them, then after a few trips, I'd have to tighten them again. I finally figured out the aluminum threads were deforming and loosening so it would leak when being pumped. I've not had any trouble with the cast iron pump. And, yes the cast iron is heavy.

Im useing a hand crank pump. Less things to go wrong. Crank the handle fuel comes out. I tryed this pump on a plastic barrel. It wore the plastic threads out real quick. I wait until the barrel in nearly empty, drain out the last 5gal or so then go fill it up. My machine only has a 5gal tank so almost never pump more than 4gal.
