Brush fire starter!!!! NEVER put old fuel in your equipment---- well unless you dont care about your injection pumps!

i worked at a phone building that had diesel that had been stored since 1952. the big ol cat generator sucked a valve in the ice storm of 2003 and they installed a new generator.

20,000 gal fuel was pumped out and distributed to other phone buildings because it cost less that a dime per gallon.

Yep, I had a business at an airport and was often given aircraft fuel.
Tractor loved it even more than my pocket book.
Naturally I well filtered it.
JP (jet) fuel is only glorified diesel anyway.
Jet fuel is kerosene.

Depends if you have an emission diesel. If NOT, strain it, Filter it, use it.

Post 2015 engines.... Common rail injectors, DPF, etc. are more expensive than a barrel of fuel.
This. The only problem might be sludge that would plug the tractor fuel filter, so filter it as it comes out of the barrel. You can buy a diesel filter kit, housing and filter, for about $25. If you don't want to spring for a barrel pump, plumb it to a funnel and do gravity filtering. After that many years, there will be some sludge, but if there's no water in the barrel it will be minimal.

My understanding is jet fuel and Kerosene are very similar but are “dryer” than diesel. I think an additive will make up for that.

So I went today and looked at (and picked it up) the barrel. It's a plastic 55 gallon with two bungs on the top. Has about 30 gallons if I recall. Brought it home, put it where the boats are. Opened one of the bungs, didn't see anything on top (don't know if crud grows "in" it....or "on" it) None the less, to the degree you could see into it when it swished around a bit, looked fine, smelled like diesel.

Came home, set it down, went to do something with the backhoe.... while doing it (pulling some vines from a patch of trees) decided to go home and work on another project.... the engine suddenly died.

Died so abruptly I just knew I had a fuel problem. Got off and diesel was spewing all over the underside onto the ground.

Long story short, I (the vine) had reached up and smashed my water seperater that is mounted to the rail next to the engine.

I'm a bit OCD about keeping things full....so the tank was pretty full. I don't recall, but it holds maybe 35-40 gallons as I recall (but don't remember)

Fuel is just draining out....I go home (a mild walk) jump on riding mower, grab some empty fuel cans and a "bun warmer" drawer that we've had. Caught about 15 gallons of what was dripping out so figure if it holds 35 gallons, I dumped about 20 onto the ground.

I looked up towards Heaven... said I don't know what you're up to.... but I see some irony that I brought home maybe 30 gallons from a neighbor.... then lost about 30 gallons out of my tank.

I've had this machine for pushing 20 years and have never, ever, ever had this happen..... until the day I brought home 30 free gallons (that might be good to use, might be bad to use!!)

Now I have to order a new glass section before I can fix it and get the hoe running again.

I guess this would/could have happened whether or not I'd gotten the tank of diesel.... so maybe I was being smiled upon to have replaced for free that which I was destined to lose!

Should have seen me as I was catching it in the stainless steel 'drawer' then putting it into my 5-gallon cans, topped off my (diesel) mower... I finally got a process down and lost very little after I got the drawer under it.
