i am looking for instructions or illustrations on how to fix my tilt steering [ JD 5525] . it does not lock into any position, up or down . it just flops . granted it was below zero when i was plowing snow this morn. If not is there a source to view shop manuals on line for free? Thank you. Hank

if your tilt is like mine there is a lever to allow a change then locks in new position and when it becomes worn will slip and not be reliable settings. What I done after looking at mine was to add additional strength springs and mine only had 1 spring but provision for 2 springs. lift the rubber shaft cover below the steering wheel and can see the ratchet and pawl and springs holding position. if in warranty might talk to shop foreman for help.

Welcome to forum and what [part of Colorado do you live?

Thank you that was helpful . I spent a couple hours in 10 degrees trying to get the allen screws out of the top of the piston hold using all my weight and tied to punch out the bottom pin . it did not budge either . I thought maybe i could take the whole steering out but i discovered that the steering shaft does not readily come apart . all i managed to do was cuss a lot . I will keep trying . Many thanks for your response

It would be nice if it had ratchet and pawl . this one has a stupid piston so my guess is the piston has failed. i just cant get it out now . . I live 50 miles sw of denver near Bailey . Thank you for your response

Used to live near Arvada then after WW11 city expanded and Dad's dairy had to go so he moved to Arkansas.
Worked all over the Western States then agreed with Dad this was the best area to live.

Wouldn't it be good if the engineers would design things after experamce in cold weather. real life situations also.

agree. you would not recognize it now, compared to your Dad's farm then. AR is very nice. I finally got the two Hex bolts and the pin out. The Hex bolts i used a 10" drawer bar pin to levereage a 6" allen wrench. Had to use a carbide grinder to split the pin then a 10lb sledge with a punch for about an hr. the pin was a hardened metal with rounded ends , could not drill it. It would not move.

!@#$%^&*( the engineer and who ever built this . They had to know it would break at some point. It was 20 degrees today so a bit warmer. Thanks for the help and support. Beenthere's diagram was key to thinking i was on the right course. Now to find the piston / cylinder to replace it. Many thanks

A little late for disassembly, but when driving the lower pin in or out, it helps alot to have a second person steady the bracket so it doesn't bounce so much. Have them hold a heavy bar or hammer on opposite side of the bracket that you are driving from. Also helps to spray with your favorite penetrating oil.

Thanks. I found that to ne essential. Found an old steering rod that helped stablize it . Took turns while the other beat on it / him. Thanks
