In addition to a filter, I'd tilt that barrel backward and bring the tractor to the fuel so any water would accumulate on the downside, away from the pump pick-up. When empty, swish some isopropyl alcohol around and dump out. Also avoid buying your fuel when a delivery truck is dumping fuel into the tanks- it stirs up the water and crud in the storage tank. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Von, where'd you get the pump and the hose?

How long is the hose?

How do you prevent the diesel left in the hose from draining all over the place?

Mike, I got my setup from my local oil distributor. I paid a little more than other sources, but I prefer to support local businesses; especially being new in town. You can get several different types of setup from Harbor Freight. There are also other online sources - one Google search I recall working was "farm nozzle"; found several suppliers of all the required stuff.

My own setup is gravity, but the only difference is whether or not you add a pump, either hand pump or electric pump. From the output, whether drum or pump, add a good quality spin-on filter, then a petroleum quality hose (mine was pre-made, 3/4", and 14' long), then a swivel, and then a farm or utility nozzle (similar to the regular gas nozzles, but without all the safety stuff). Since my setup is gravity, I also added a ball valve before the filter rather than depend on the nozzle to prevent the flow. I also had to add several pipe fittings to adapt to the barrel, and a vent setup at the other barrel opening. If you use a barrel pump, it should have the correct fittings and probably a built-in vent.

I don't remember the breakdown, but the total cost for everything was around $150 without a pump.

Mike,
The pump is a leftover from when my family owed an oil company. Had to buy a new hose at TSC. The hose is 10ft. long, and I just pick it up and drain it into the tractor when I am done pumping in the fuel. I'm sure I leave some in there, but I don't spell any so it must be working.

Mike,

I got mine from Northern Tool .

The hose is about 10ft. and as far as the fuel in the hose, I just let it drain into the tractor. The nozzle has a twist lock in the holder on the pump that keeps the nozzle from getting knocked off.

I would highly recommend it! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
