I got a friend over to check out the flywheel while I turned the crank and it turned out that I have a bad ring gear. Will take care of this in the next few days. Having found this though does not mean the problem is solved. The starter has just been serviced and only used a maximum of about two seconds continuously. We first looked at the ground which was ok. The starter though did show a tremendous load when used in place. Once taken off the tractor it is working great. I'm sure we will get it figured out in time.

Try it again and see if that new wire is too hot to touch. If not, then the wire isn't the problem. Touch all the connections looking for one that got hot.

I just read your post and realized that I should have done that initially but it just never came to mind. Will check it out when the starter is placed onto the tractor again.

Most larger cities will a business that specializes in converting a 6 volt starter to 12 volt. The size of the starter wire has nothing to with it.

Yes you can jumpstart a 6 volt with a 12 volt battery without hurting the starter

Just don't jump a snowsled battery with your pickup, or you WILL burn up the starter.
Off topic a bit, but my butt still hurts from kicking it so many times after ruining a perfectly good starter. :(
